Huh? You can't compare Russell Wilson and Connor Shaw. Wilson was 10x the passer Shaw was in college. Blame it on the system if you want, but Wilson through for over 3,000 yards every year he started.

I thought Russell Wilson was highly underdrafted and a steal in the 3rd round. Dude had one of the best lasers in college football. Only thing he lacked at QB position was height. If he was 3" taller, he would have been a sure Top 5 pick in any draft.

10x? That is a little exaggerative no?

I don't recall this love for Russell from the people that do this for a job.

Russell and Shaw have similar skill sets physically. Shaw looking to throw first and not take hits will be key going forward.

If RW hadn't of had that incredible Sr season at Wisky, he could have easily been an UDFA like Connor.
Playing smart and not losing games are two attributes that both QBs share. It that has served them and the teams they've played on well.

Why would Johnny be rolling up a $20 bill in the men's room? Stephen was never this out of control. This is sad. What a waste. Evidence is mounting that this young man may have dependency concerns. Connor needs to turn and burn as he may be substantially closer to playing time than the world once thought.

We'll find out in about 8 weeks whether all that off field experience is working for him. If he is relying on substance abuse for entertainment, how is he going to use it when the pressures of professional football hit him?

It's difficult to put a quantitative number on how much better one is at passing than another. I would agree with cola though, RW is a significantly better passer than Shaw. Other skills may be on par, but throwing, not even close... especially the deep ball. Not a good comparison IMO.

I really do hope Shaw has a shot. Manziel is either going to crash and burn or he will be the new NFL villain like Namath because half the fans of the sport will not want him to win.

Manziel likely to begin NFL
career as Johnny Backup

Cleveland's first full-squad training camp practice is Saturday morning at the team's headquarters in Berea.

Quote:
But even if Hoyer becomes the starter and wins like he did last season, it wouldn't necessarily preclude Manziel from playing as a rookie. I wouldn't rule out the possibility of Shanahan featuring Manziel in certain packages.

And remember, the backup always seems to find himself in the lineup in Cleveland. No Browns quarterback has started all 16 regular-season games since Tim Couch in 2001.

Which is why the competition between veteran Tyler Thigpen and undrafted rookie Connor Shaw for the No. 3 quarterback job could be more important than anyone wants to admit. As Pat Shurmur would say, "I saw some eyes roll." Still, the Browns have started three quarterbacks in two of the past four seasons, so it does matter.

In the under card featuring Thigpen and Shaw, I'll go with the rookie because of the upside he showed in spring practices and because Thigpen was out of football last season.

In the main event pitting Hoyer against Manziel, I'll stick with the veteran and expect the rookie to surface at some point during the upcoming season.

From WFNY (Waiting For Next Year, lol!):

Quote:
– Lost in the Hoyer/Manziel battle is the fact that there are two other quarterbacks on the roster. Conner Shaw is the rookie from South Carolina battling Tyler Thigpen. Thigpen has a ton of experience on Shaw, and was in Buffalo with Mike Pettine. There was one play in particular that showed Shaw’s inexperience reading an NFL defense. He has a wide receiver coming open deep across the middle, but rushed the ball to the sideline for an incompletion.
Shaw has uphill battle for opportunities. Hope he gets a decent shot in preseason games.

Connor Shaw tackling Cleveland Browns’ playbook

http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/...9-20210e82fc6e

Quote:
When Shaw called a play at the University of South Carolina, it he only had to use three, maybe four words. With the Cleveland Browns, play calls can reach upwards of 15 to 16 words. One wrong word could lead to a receiver being on a different page than Shaw, resulting in an interception.

"The margin of error is so small compared to college," Shaw said, of playing in the NFL. "You just have to be focused at all times."

I'd like to see him move up to at least backup, which I think he can. As bad as Manziel appears to be, he's a heck of a QB and brings star power so I doubt the Browns would do anything more than a slap on the wrist for their star QB. Even if Shaw doesn't make it in the NFL, he can be successful in pretty much whatever he wants to do. He's a smart guy with a good head on his shoulders, unlike Manziel, so I'm sure he'll be fine. The only downside is being in Cleveland.

We've heard Coach Spurrier express regret more than once about being too accepting of his role as clipboard holder instead of giving his all in trying to win playing time. I'll bet a dollar to a doughnut that Coach burned that regret deep into Connor's subconscious. I'm hoping so anyway, as he's far too fast with way too much heart not to earn playing time.

Default Re: Shaw Interview: SB Nation - Browns

What is going on in Cleveland right now reminds us all so much of Shaw's status when he arrived at South Carolina. There's the obvious lifestyle similarities between Manziel and Garcia. However even more than that is that fact that Shaw was patient and awaited his chances at USC despite many of us (me included) doubting his abilities compared to the assumed ones of Garcia. Shaw made the most of his chances and the rest is history.

I think we are all hoping the same kind of situation for him in Cleveland. We should all remember that Shaw's FIRST chance really came against East Carolina and while he didn't stink up the place, he really wasn't great. Garcia had to come in and win the day and the starting job again.

This may be a rocky road if and when Shaw DOES ever become the starter with the Browns - and I'm sure that Connor knows and understands that. He's been there before and with some luck/fate we'll all be Browns fans soon enough.

I'm not going to say Manziel is going to be a great QB in the NFL. He may not even be a good QB in the NFL. Maybe we should take the wait and see approach over judging his success in 3-4 training camp performances with ~30 passes...just maybe?
