And fingers crossed, potential US player (if he decides to play for us) Gedion Zelalem plays for Arsenal.

Sorry about that. I should have mentioned the link is a year old and three teams were relegated/promoted. Here's a good read on the promoted teams.

Pretty good thread so far. Thanks for help.

Maybe most of my hatred for soccer is not understanding how it is organized across the globe...I played growing up so I know most of the rules and how the sport functions. The rest of my dislike comes from some of the rules (timing, ties, excessive flopping, etc).

It's like one huge constant tournament across the world. You are always playing for something bigger than what you are currently trying to win. Hmm.

can someone please explain to me how timing works in soccer? Overall it seems highly subjective (cough US-Portugal)

two 45 minute halves with "Stoppage time"

stoppage time is the amount of time --approximated-- that play has stopped.

injuries, substitutions, goals etc all usually add 1 min per occasion depening on the length of the sub or injury.

VS Portugal there were 2 injuries a sub and a goal...and when Zusi was subbed he took too long walking off so they added another minute...if I'm not mistaken.

Do you think the fact that stoppage time is approximate, and only known by the refs up until the end of regulation, only adds to the perceived (and actual?) corruption of FIFA?

what about when the ball is kicked out of bounds? does the clock stop or not (if so that is a whole lot of small increments for the ref to add up)?

the reason it seems so subjective to me is, using the US-Portugal game as an example, if Ronaldo takes 5 more seconds (or however much time was left at that point) to get the cross off is the ref really going to end the game with the ball in mid-air at that point (after all 90 minutes is 90 minutes)

The ref will never end the game if the team trailing is attacking/has possession on the ball and a legitimate scoring chance.

For example if that's USA attacking at the point of the game with us up 2-1 the ref probably blows the whistle.

So if we got some kind of touch on that ball in that series and gained possession the ref would have ended the game.

No it's a rolling clock all the way up to 45 and 90 minutes then the dreaded Stoppage Time. They usually try to call the game also when the ball is in midfield. Calling it during an attacking possession is seen as a big no-no, but they are allowed to if they really please to call it at that moment.

Yep, see the France v Switzerland match when France was on the attack and Benzema scored right as the whistle sounded. It didn't count. France was up 5-2 already but had the ball, the man advantage, and were right in front of the box when the ref blew his whistle.
