Default English at 250 (twitter)

Darius English (BTW spell check keeps changing it to Dark English- damn you Dave Chappell) has been talked about a lot this summer on this board, and is slotted as the starter by most people. What skill set does he bring to the table? I've heard him compared to Devin Taylor, which is good company to be in. I think it is reasonable to believe he will weigh in at 260+ by Sept. Thoughts on how this changes the outlook on our d-line as a whole?

I guess you are referring to his post on 6/29 saying he is at 250 lbs. It will be damn near impossible for him to put on 20 more lbs of good weight in 6-7 weeks. That said I think he can be a player similar to Vic Beasley of Clemson. He's got good athleticism and length and could have a productive year for us. We really need him to step up this year and I think he will have a good year, helping our "underrated" d-line gain respect.

I wonder where the Beasley comparison comes from. They seem very different in build and height. English is tall like D Taylor, and put on weight slowly as well, but I don't know how their playing styles will compare. Taylor was a walking lesson in assignment football, was excellent against the run, dropped back in coverage effectively, and could rush the QB when called for. A team-mate who played the other DE (Cliff Matthews) called him a "silent assassin." I hope English develops that mindset and skillset.

I think Darius can be a disruptive end like Vic and they are both athletic DEs. Clemson hate aside, we would be lucky if Darius could put up the same production as Vic did last year. Yes I know Clemson plays inferior talent week in and week out, but with the other guys we have on defense it should help Darius out, especially in blitz packages.

I think it's great that he's 250....but I'm a lot more interested to see if he can maintain that weight through summer/fall camp. I also want to see if he still has that same first step with the added weight.

Before Brad Lawling left for Florida, he was very high on English and said he had potential to be a great one. I do respect Brad's opinion as I thought he was a great coach. So maybe this is the year that English breaks out for us.....Go Cocks!

I agree 250-255 will be a good weight for him right now (I believe that was about what Clowney weighed most of his sophomore season). Fingers crossed that he hasn't just been living in the weight room though. Meaning, I hope his football on field stamina is good. I'd hate for him to come into camp and have to get into football shape while camp is going on. Our new starters NEED their reps in camp. A&M has a good O-line.

So pumped about this news. I expect him to lead the team in sacks.

D Taylor = "Don't Say Nothin'"

As far as English, I the rumor going around here was he was given a new diet and he started gaining weight. Most people think of English as a third down and long player. That is how Clemp used Beasley.

If he is anywhere nearly as productive, you would have to be ecstatic. Problem is that English will be playing against some very good OLs and Beasley plays against some mediocre and bad OLs. That helps Beasley's statistics.

Beasley has stats that look good on paper, but when I try and picture him in our uniform he seems mediocre at best. He couldn't hold up the edge on running plays and as a result I doubt he would have as many sacks in the SEC. BAW can be our Beasley this yr. We need much more out of English. I hope he is much much better/ well rounded, reguardless of sack total.

Hopefully English can develop similar along the lines of how Taylor developed. Both were long, lean athletic freaks who also played basketball in high school. Devin had 110 tackles, 19 TFL, and 10 sacks as a Sr. for AAAA Beaufort, while Darius had 100 tackles, 17 TFL, and 22 sacks and was GA AAAAA Def. POY and Parade AA.

English was higher regarded out of HS than Taylor was. He's now around 6-6, 250, while Taylor was listed as 6-8, 244 in 2010 which was his career-best year at USC. If English can even come CLOSE to what Taylor was able to provide during his time at USC, he'll be fine...

Beasley is listed as 6-2, 235...we'll have at DE:

Cedrick Cooper (6-2, 235)
Devin Washington (6-3, 226)
Mason Harris (6-3, 231)

Maybe they'll be utilized like Beasley, but who knows. Beasley was used like a edge-rushing OLB in a typical 3-4 scheme, in Clemson's 4-3. Like a blitzing safety that was too quick and agile and elusive for OTs to get their bear mitts on him. Half of his career tackles are tackles for loss. They found a great fit for him in their scheme. Hopefully we find good fits for our guys...

Good stats Conway! I would also note that Beasley's sack totals from last year are heavily weighted in the first half of the season. Beasley had around 12 sacks last year and got 9 in the first 6 games....he had 3 or 4 against UGA alone.

Over the last 7 games Beasley only had 3-4 sacks. The point is, the kid is not DE size and cannot overpower a LT.....once teams realized they needed to plan for him his production plummeted. No one knew about Beasley to start the season, Georgia certainly didn't, and Beasley took advantage of the oversight.

Beasley will not likely not have near the number for sacks this year as he had last year. Maybe Clem really does have an outstanding defense this year, I don't know, but I do think much of the hype around Clem's DL is from Beasley's stats that, like I said, seem to be built on the fact he was such an uknown.

That is great that he is at 250... he needs to be eating everything in sight from now till fall. If he could peak at 260 265 by the season he will be back around 245 250.

Exactly. He will drop probably atleast 10 pounds as fall camp gets started. A person who is not "out of shape" has to add some fat along with muscle.

So if he can hit 260 by Fall it's possible he can play around 250

That is quite impressive... Hopefully he will overcome the weight plateau and be able to maintain it. IMO he has the skills, he just needs that weight so he isn't pushed around as much.

This seems realistic. Start at 260 with a bit of fluff, and by the end of the season, be around 240, but all muscle. Do it all again next offseason, getting to 270, then by the end of the year, 250 or so. If he can maintain his explosiveness and speed, he'll be an ideal size.

I regret never trying the bulk and trim technique. Just don't have the mental or physical energy to dedicate to such an effort. These computer keys are too easy to push to need to get hulked.

The paid sites reports that he is 255lb and 7% body fat. It is highly unlikely he will lose weight in fall camp. The ideal body fat for athletes is 6-13% anything else would be unhealthy(underfat). More than likely he comes in fall camp at 260 and maybe lose a pound during training.

No one goes thru fall camp and loses just a pound. This is from someone who knows from experience. As a coach I've seen kids drop 5-10#'s in a day but everyone will drop over the month of August. Darius will end up 5-8#'s lighter.

Exactly my thoughts (on Lawing) being high on English. I don't think he will have trouble keeping the weight on or losing any first step. He has the drive and talent to be a good one, and he will be. No reason to believe other wise
