Busta is one of the better pass catching tight ends in college. I expect him to have a great season. The NFL team that picks him up will be very lucky.

Last couple of years, I've hoped Busta or Jerrell would be looked at as a jumbo WR since Alshon left. Both have WR speed (Jerrell a little faster), good hands, and can catch away from their bodies - and we were kind of loaded at TE. Busta has stayed a little lighter but strong, while Jerrell has gotten over 240. I hope, at least we see some split-out formations and some 2 TE sets with both run and pass plays. I'd still like to see either as a forward blocker on punts with the option to pull a Melvin.

I know. I've given up trying to explain to people that TE never has and never will be a big part of Spurrier's offense.

Last year Adams and Busta had like 29 or so combined catches. I'll expect the same this year. Possibly less if Busta doesn't get cleared until October or not at all.

A few crosses, check downs and seam routes here and there and that's it.

Pretty much. I could see Adams with 25 grabs though because I think Dylan probably attempts close to 350 passes this year. Probably see him out there in the slot when we go empty backfield too.

Not really expecting a whole lot from Busta this year. Adams is flourishing in Fall camp.

Yea I think it is Adams job this year to do his thing. He could approach 25 or so catches. If that happens Busta may be around 10 catches max if he plays.

Then again DT has the tendency to look downfield more through his 1st few progressions. Only plays going the TEs way are those called crosses and seam routes which aren't many by the HBC

If our tight ends average 3 catches per game, it will be an increase over last year, but I expect somewhat more unless we are just killing teams with the run without needing to open-up the second level. If TE's never will be a big part of Spurrier's offense, I guess top talent tight ends shouldn't consider going here. The 2 recruits for '15 seem to fit that scenario, since neither has any speed or is rated very highly.
Coaches who want to win use the talent they've got, not what fits their favorite scheme. Look how many times we've missed on 3rd and 7 or 8 trying to throw 25 yards downfield to a covered receiver, and conversely how many times Shaw got that 3rd and 8 by taking off when his first option was covered. I think Thompson is more likely to look at a second or third underneath guy than to take off.

Is this what you were looking for?

Seriously though...every year on here and especially on that God forsaken radio show in Columbia, I hear how the secret of an explosive offense is passing to the tight ends.

I admit, we have had some amazing talent there that seems underutilized, but at the same time if a tight end was catching 5-8 passes a game out of the 20 or so we throw, I would be whining about not throwing to the wide receivers.

I wouldn't say people are "obsessed" with throwing to the TE's, but I agree, we have very athletic guys there that at times aren't just underutilized, they're ignored.

Make it a lot easier for a DC to gameplan against us when he can virtually ignore one position until we make them pay.

I doubt that is the point of this thread though.

I think Dylan will go through his progressions/reads longer without taking off more so than Connor and therefore create some more opportunities for the TE's to get catches.
