Could Nate be another"Jedi" (see Mon Denson) "under the radar" recruit? Did anyone see him workout at The Showcase?

From what I understand, He is from Knoxville area and his brother plays for Butch but not offered by utk who offers seemingly half of the nation 's recruits. So what gives?

There is often more to a recruiting situation than shows on the surface. Jumping into a deep position pool in a demanding program isn't best for all athletes. An OL, for example, usually takes more time to become game ready than other positions, and by the time they find out they are either going to get PT or wash out, it's hard to transfer to a lower program where they have a chance to play. Gilliam's strength-related measurables are not nearly top-tier for an OL despite his size. Our S&C program, as well as training can develop these guys to where they need to be, but it takes commitment, patience, and is grueling. It takes around 3-4 good HS linemen to get one good SEC level player, and the dedication thing is a big factor in determining which one it will be. Coaches, on the other hand, want to get top material, convince them to be "all-in," and lead, push, inspire, and drag them through the tough parts of the process. I think our coaches are realistic with our prospects, and use "being sure of your commitment" to get a good match. Being sure doesn't mean you're just sure you want to be here, but being sure you want to do what's needed to belong and be successful here. Zandi, for instance, was a tall, thin, rather slow-footed, kinda soft tackle prospect - lightly recruited, who the coaches believed was willing to get with it and become who he needed to be to play OL at a top program. Apparently he's put in the work so far. We will see which of our OL recruits meet the challenge, but I don't think we will know for a couple of years which ones have it. Cann was almost a sure thing, but he was perfectly willing to redshirt and develop - and he's an exceptional young man.

Watched his film...wasn't bad but I wasn't wowed.

Looks to play with a little nastiness, which I like.
Fundamentally needs work. Drops his hands a lot out of the stance and doesn't use his length to get seperation. At times came out of his stance low, and better DL will throw him down. But those are things coaching can fix.
Also, didn't have the quickest feet, but that could be that he just has bad weight and is still growing into his body. (Don't know him, so he may have gone through a major growth spurt and that could be the cause of his uncoordination...or he is just uncoordinated naturally).

Right now, reminds me of a Will Sport type guy...will probably be a backup his whole career, may start as a RS Senior. I won't say he isn't a take, but right now, I'd prefer we hammer away at Bailey, Pellage, Sandifer and Michael Howard before we focus on Gilliam.

Agree about Pellage, Bailey, and Sandifer. Go hard after those three, hopefully land them, and maybe take Gilliam if we miss on a player at another position.

Quote:
OL Nathan Gilliam of Knoxville said Sunday night he’s planning to announce his college decision at his school on August 15th. Right now USC and Wake Forest are in a dead heat but an offer from Ole Miss would shake things up. Ole Miss has told him they are waiting on one other lineman and if they don’t get him, they will offer Gilliam.
Gilliam has visited all three schools. He was at USC’s Showcase Camp where he worked under offensive line coach Shawn Elliott. “He told me he wants to take two more (offensive linemen),” Gilliam said. “He said whenever you are ready we’ll take you in the Gamecock family. I could see myself playing for coach Elliott. He’s very intense. He got after me in camp. He’s on you and I want someone like that who will push me and make me the best I can be.”
Gilliam also camped at USC before his junior season and that’s when Elliott first got a glimpse of him, and he’s kept tabs on the Gamecocks since then.
“They are winning football games,” he said. “It’s the SEC and only four hours away. The big thing for me is the coaching staff. There’s a foundation there.”
Gilliam said he should know if Ole Miss is going to offer about two or three days before his announcement.
