Since we are playing Marquette, here is sorta funny story.

Tom Riker played when Freshmen were ineligible. He was supposed to be a big star as a Sophomore big man but was largely missing in action for the first few games.

We started out ranked #1 and dropped to #3 after an early loss, then had a big national TV match-up with #2 Marquette. Sunday game, McGuire versus McGuire, coach versus former player.

Riker spent the night before consuming large amounts of alcohol and dancing solo to "Layla" over and over at a local watering hole. He kept playing it on the jukebox and had some nice moves on the dance floor. He was finally carried out in the wee hours by two very large bouncers.

Riker came out on fire and dominated the early minutes of the game. The announcer made the comment that Riker had really prepared himself for the game - in reality, I think his blood alcohol level was still high enough that he finally started playing loose.

Then he promptly got into a fight with Marquette Forward Bob "the Black Swan" Lacey, and both were thrown out of the game. We seemed to have more fights than an average hockey game back then. And Marquette won the game.

Good times.

My freshman year 66-67, all the games were played in the old Field House. It was a great place to watch a game. I remember when we played Clemson, their football coach, Frank Howard, walked all the way around the gym to sit in the student section behind the Carolina bench, getting booed the whole way. Of course when he sat down, the Carolina students got up and moved. My favorite game that year was when North Carolina came to Columbia and we beat them 70 - 57. I believe they eventually lost to John Wooden, Lou Alcindor and UCLA in the national finals that year. We had Jack Thompson, Skip Harlicka, Frank Standard, Lyn Burkholder, and Gary Gregor as the 5 starters and Al Salvatori as the 6th man. Lou Bella was one of the refs and stopped the game once when Dean Smith complained about fans flashing lights behind one of the baskets when his players were shooting foul shots. He took Coach McGuire to that end of yhe court to talk to the fans and the place got so quite you could hear McGuire say as they walked down there, "But Lou, these are my people." Needless to say, the place went crazy!

Really glad to see great basketball times coming back to Carolina!

What a joy to see the video about Coach McGuire! I remember well when he came to Carolina. My first of many chats with him took place in a motel in Charlotte. I was coaching at A.C. Flora and Bill Loving, the coach at Columbia High called me as we were coming in from football practice and asked if I wanted to go to Charlotte to see a basketball game with Philadelphia and meet Coach McGuire. He picked me up as I finished showering and dressing and of we went. After the game we went over to the motel by the coliseum and found Charlie Todd and George Moore's room. That is where I first met Coach McGuire.
Bill and I got back to Columbia about 6 AM, enough time to eat get dressed and get to school for another day.
I am so thankful for that night and the many more conversations and time got to spend with Coach McGuire and Buck Freeman. It is unreal how much I learned from those times as well as working in Coach McGuire's summer basketball schools. He did call them camp but rather schools because he want kids to be taught basketball not jus play games.
I am also blessed by having two of my players to play for Coach. Jerry Scurry from Flora was the fifth man with the first four guys recruited on the freshman team. Bill Gause from Hammond was the other one.
What a blessing for this 83 year old guy to enjoy that video and reflect on those days. It also brought back some memories from my days in the old field house and attending the first game in the Coliseum, Auburn I think and John Roach hitting a long one at the end for the win!
Sorry for such a long post but that is what you get from old guys most of the time.
GO COCKS, let's get two more wins!!!

The game where we played NC State for the ACC Title in 1970, John Roche pretty much
played on one leg because he had "sprained" his ankle in the Semi Final game against
Wake Forrest. There was just a few minutes left to play and SC had the game in hand.
Roche picked up a ball that deflected off of the Wake Forrest Guard, and he started a
breakaway that would have been an easy layup, but he and the guy from Wake got
"tangled up" and Roche hit the floor and grabbed his ankle and it was clear that it was
a pretty serious injury. ... Frank McGuire after the game had a long heated conversation
with the Wake coach and the officials. He went off in the press the next day saying that
the Wake Forrest player tripped Roche on purpose, and that he would post evidence of
it for the next several weeks along with his "opinion" of the officiating and the flagrant
move to injure his player. ..... He did that, because several times on the local media
and on his talk show that weekend, he showed the play in slow motion and it was very
clear that once Roche picked up the loose ball and turned up court, the Wake player
looked down at Roche's feet and swept sideways around his ankles. There was no
way to dismiss that it was intentional. Probably cost us another ACC title.

Buck Freeman was the best free throw coach in the country

my dad tells of when he was at carolina coaching an intramural team (he had an injury) and buck walked in and taught them all how to shoot freethrows, real coaching.

dad later tells a story of getting his boys vs some of cremins friends, and coaching against Cremins in a game his boys won...so of course dad always says he is 1-0 vs Bobby, and handed Bobby his first loss as a coach.
