there are two very important issues that need to be addressed in terms of English bunting more:
1. can he put down good bunts consistently. Look at the bunt he layed down against Arkansas the first time, there were really only a few spots on the field where he cant put the bunt (right back at the pitcher, kill it so much that the catcher can make a play on it or where down the line hard enough that the first basemen can pick it up and tag him out), he put it hard enough down the line where the first basemen just had to pick it up and tag him).
2. it is more difficult for a right hander to bunt for a base hit than a lefty. it takes more time for a righty to get to first from the batters box and it is tougher to control the distance of the ball after it comes off the bat for a righty as well.

that being said, if he can become a good (doesn't have to be great) bunter he could probably bunt his way through the season rarely swinging the bat and have close to a .300 average with his speed.

How about this play? Have Tanner English go first-to-third on a fielder's choice. I saw this twice on MLB Tonight last night. I've never seen it done before and I was excited when I saw it.

Once Tanner English get on first base. If the next batter hits a high chopper or good bunt....basically any hit that induces a long, drawn out throw to 1st base for the Fielders Choice...have Tanner go ahead and take third base.

When the fielder catches the ball, he has no chance at getting Tanner at second so he's not even thinking it. Tanner can basically be sorta rounding second at this point. As soon as Tanner see's him fire over to 1st base for the Fielders Choice, he can bolt for 3rd Base and be half way there before the throw back to 3rd is even attempted.


I don't know if something like this would work or not. I was kinda excited when I saw Jose Reyes do it last night. Not sure but Tanner English probably has somewhat comparable speed.

Sounds risky. Like the idea, but I would save it for a time of need.

it would need to be on a play that the 3rd basemen has to field (or a ball hit in the hole between the SS and 3rd basemen) so that he is out of position, where it basically becomes a race between him and whoever is going to cover third.

Just watched the other instance of a similar play on http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/video/p...78860&c_id=bos (1:40 mark)

Ryan Kalish did it last night in the Bos/MIA game...here's how he did it.

And it's not a set play more-so as it's just good, alert base-running by a very speedy guy. Would be exciting to see Tanner English do this though.

Kalish was on 1st Base. Ball hit was a high chopper that the 1st Basemen had to field. The runner makes a short turn at second and peeks back and as soon as the 1B gloved the ball and makes a move to flip it to the covering Pitcher (slow developing play), the runner takes off for 3rd. He makes it into 3rd sliding head first.
