Saw him in a suit and tie today on the Horseshoe. Walking with some assistant coaches. Not that it means much at all but he looked ready for buisness, I am not all too familiar with Coach Tanner and the way he dresses outside of the diamond, maybe thats normal for him.

I really hope this isn't going to happen. Not now. In ten years yes, but not now. He's in his prime as a coach.

Agreed. Tanner is the best individual in the country at coaching and developing a college baseball program. We need the best individual in the country at running, expanding, and evolving an athletic department. A business is not a sports team. I think great emotions associated with Ray Tanner are throwing up blinders for some of our fans.

This man will be successful in this position as he would in almost any position. The guy has serious management, networking and administrative skills. He can fill any gaps in his skill set IF he takes over by hiring the right people. He's the kind of guy who doesn't need to prove he's the smartest man in the room, he wants to hire the smartest man in the room and that is a recipe for bigtime success in just about any field, IMOP. We all would rather have him stay on as baseball coach, but he didn't want to do that indefinitely, so I'd rather keep in affiliated with our program and make the move while we've got holbrook in place.

What better time to walk away from coaching than 2 ntl championships and 3 title games in 3 years? If he is ready to move on with his career then staying on as coach doesn't sound like the best idea to me. We have a more than capable asst ready to take over with a new group of talent. Everybody involved is already familiar with the school, teams, players, coaches. Seems too perfect not to do it honestly

I think Frank Martin put it well yesterday. He said Tanner knows how to communicate and get everybody on board with him. I think that will benefit all programs. And the dude can raise money just by showing up in the state right now. I just hope his planning and budgeting skills are up to par |

If Tanner doesn't become our new AD, I think we would lose Holbrook to another school as a HC

I feel like we needed a big time move like we got with the Frank Martin hire. "Promoting" your head baseball coach to his first AD job is not a big time move.
I hope it works out for us.

What everyone is missing is ... Coach Tanner doesn't want to coach his whole career. Yes, he's the greatest Baseball coach in the nation, but that's not what he wants to do forever. He wants to try his hand at AD work. He's made that clear PLENTY of times. He's not saying "hey Hyman left. I think that'd be fun to try out the AD spot because it's Tuesday." He was an assistant AD before, and thinks thats where he wants to go.

It is a LOT bigger move than hiring another bastard bean counter.

Exactly, so the choice is to hire him or to spurn his interest perhaps causing he and holbrook and maybe meyer to go elsewhere, or to let him try his hand at a job he wants and thinks he would be good at. Its not like our BOT just doesn't want to do the search so they're forcing tanner to take it.

Cautiously optomistic. There will be a lot of people left in place who were there under Hyman so..hopefully the transition will be smooth from the mgmnt aspect of the hire.
