Default Ranking the SEC's Defensive Ends...

http://espn.go.com/blog/sec/post/_/i...defensive-ends

Ok, I get it. It is all about LSU this year again. However, to rank Sam Montgomery over Jadeveon Clowney is completely insane.

They claim he is the more complete DE. Ok, so in what ways is this guy a freak of nature, and in all things the rawest form of beast talent of a DE you have ever seen?

Taylor should be higher as well, but whatever. Let the bloggers blog. The truth will come out on the field.

I think it's pointless to argue at this point which one is better. What I don't get is why you would think it's insane to rank Montgomery higher. The guy has 11 sacks in 19 games. He's going to be a great player.

I thought the list was pretty fair, though I don't think Mingo is a true DE... he stands up too much, I'd call him an OLB or hybrid.

I can understand the rankings.....Montgomery is older and has more experience as an every-down DE, while Clowney was used mostly in specific situations as a true freshman last season. IMO Jadeveon still has to prove he can do as well at what Montgomery has already proven he can do. I feel he will prove it and then some this season, but it's still yet to be seen...

The last time I saw Montgomery play last year and the last time I saw Clowney play last year, I would have to agree, Montgomery was the more complete player. That's the scariest thing about Clowney, he was still learning at the end of the season. As his run stopping skills and fundamentals improve, he is only going to get better. His athleticism and instincts give him more potential than Montgomery.

By the end of last season, I can see the argument that Montgomery was the better.

That does not bother me, because if you made a vote on "Between Montgomery and Clowney, which DE is more likely to be double the menace he was last season," there is absolutely zero question what the answer is there. Not only that, I fully believe that Clowney's athletic 'ceiling' by the end of this season is higher than Montgomery's.

Seeing reports like these make me smile, honestly, because it makes it all the better when they are blown out of the water come game day.

Before I get called for ripping off someone else's post, I just wanna say that I read this after I typed my reply to the initial post to this thread. But I think it goes to show the consensus: Clowney is going to be a menace beyond what we know.

Clowney made some great plays last year. However, he was inconsistent and made freshman mistakes from time to time. IMO, you cannot reasonably say the rankings are insane.

I wouldn't think rating Montgomery over Clowney is way out of line for someone not writing from a Gamecock perspective. I also wouldn't trade Clowney for Montgomery. I'm not sure there's a DE in the conference I'd trade Devin Taylor for this year. As posters have pointed out, the season will tell the story, not some preseason rating. You can bet your boots (and spurs) Clowney will be a target all year, from scheming to double teams to holding to cut blocking. If he keeps blockers away from his body, he might not get held as much as he and Taylor did last year. He will be a presence that will help everybody else on the defense.

When it comes to his ceiling and the fact he had 5 forced fumbles and 8 sacks his freshmen year, without even knowing where he was lining up time to time it is insane to argue he is better than Clowney. At some point people have to stop looking at who plays at LSU and always saying they are better, based on the fact they play for LSU. And anyone with a brain knows Clowney is the best DE in the SEC.. and probably the nation.

Sam Montgomery is a more complete DE then Clowney is, he is better against the run. He has more experience etc. That is the reason he is ranked higher then Clowney. Will Montgomery be better then Clowney? No but they are basing it off last year and the spring in which Montgomery had a better season while Clowney showed flashes of greatness but also made freshmen mistakes.
