Red ring of death

How many times have you had it? And what did you do to fix it? Did you ship it in?

I had it a few months after I bought my Xbox. I tried to the towel trick and it worked. And I got it again a couple days ago. It had prob been about 9 months since I first got it. And tried the towel trick again. Worked like a charm,

I remember my first RROD. I plugged the controller in wrong somehow and it red ringed. Scared the shit out of me. But I just turned if off and unplugged the controller and turned it back on and it was fine. So it was kind of a false alarm. I've been lucky though, playing since combat evolved and never had a "real RROD".

Do not use the towel trick any more! It won't work forever. Your RRODs will become more frequent. What you're doing when you use the towel trick is overheating the components on purpose to reset the board and trick the system into thinking nothing's wrong when in reality, there is.

This is like if your car's engine was overheating, and you tricked the car into thinking that the engine was at normal running temperature and kept on going, it just gets hotter and hotter until everything under the hood becomes useless and a mess for whoever's fixing it to sort out. An expensive mess.

Send your system in for service. RROD service is covered for 3 years after buying the console. However, if you melt the heatsink into slag by covering the system in towels, Microsoft won't do jack for you under warranty and you'll likely have to buy an entirely new system.

Well I bOught a refurbished one anyways. Without a warranty. Sooo it was either that, or buy a new one anyways. Tried the free option. Lol.

It may just be cheaper to buy another one. I know that sounds kinda stupid, but Microsoft will charge close to the cost of a replacement one anyway. My 360 just went out, but I have had it for almost 6 years though. I didn't bother even asking Microsoft about how much it would cost. I just bit the bullet and bought the Racing Bundle off of Amazon.

First time I got it, my neighbor did the fix where you fix something with pennies. Not sure exactly what. It lasted about a month, then got it again. I just bought a refurbished one from Gamestop with a 2-year warranty. Only $150 with a wireless controller IIRC.

im on my 4th xbox since 2005. first one red ringed within a year, was fixed for free. the refurbished one i got back did the same within a year...was still under warranty so i got it fixed for free. The 3rd one lasted about 3 years and just completely died. warranty was up so i bought a brand new one in 2010 and its been great ever since.

most RRODs come from the graphics board over heating.. theyre easy to fix if you dont have a warranty. u can look it up online. all it is is reapplying some thermal gel to one of the gfx chips. The towel trick actually fries your xbox a lil more everytime you do it. it works because the system gets so hot that it shuts down everything and gives you a fresh boot minus the errors. but it normally doesnt last long without it red ringing again.

but from what I hear the YLOD and RROD are similar in cause

The penny fix works and pretty easy to do if you are comfortable taking the xbox apart. You can find directions online... that is how I fixed my original xbox, but now I have moved on to the new slim.

My brother's xbox 360(the first version) got it about 2-3 years after getting the machine; he sent it back and they fixed it then it happened again more recently within the past year or so and is now basically useless because of the warranty not being valid etc, etc..

My xbox(I have an Elite that I bought about 3-4 years ago) hasn't had anything like that so I'm glad(knock on wood)

What did you do to fix it? Mine has got the ylod, too. Tried fan test and hair dryer (at least got MLB out of the drive). I'd love to open it up, but I don't have the tools. I can't even reseat the hard drive because my screwdriver is stripping that little plastic screw.

xbox is over 4 years old. never had it. never had ncaa football games freeze either. ive also never seen the skating players. guess im a lucky one
