I'll give this a try, don't expect it to be at the Maestro's level:
Some impressions from the scrimmage: I missed the first 15 minutes, as the time got pushed forward. Generally speaking, our Offense looks sharper than I've seen it at this stage in previous years. Connor is definitely getting through his progressions faster, and doing a better job of getting rid of the ball. He's also anticipating his receivers movements, and making throws. There were some designed sprintouts called, too, with mixed results. Dylan is doing ok - but his decision-making isn't as quick. He'll surprise you a little with his ability to run, btw. I thought Clifford had a great scrimmage - he was playing against the 3rd unit, but he was really making quick decisions, good reads, and throwing the ball well. The TD pass to Shaq R was a beautiful football play - Shaq was running a post route, Cliff gunned it high over the defender, Shaq went up and got it and got a foot in at the back of the endzone. Shaq is too skinny, imo, but once he gets off of initial contact, he's sneaky and keeps working - he's one of those guys that a defender eventually loses. He had another nice catch besides the TD. I'm starting to think it less likely he red shirts. Another freshman who impressed me was Darius English, who is also skinny, but has great speed around the edge. I think he had a sack, but either way he was generating some pressure. Marcus looks like Marcus @ 100%. He played one series - short pickup of about 2, then a zone read he took inside, made some nice cuts and picked up what looked to be like 20+. This was against the first unit, btw. Next play he carried for a short gain. Welcome back, ML. Brandon had a big gainer on a reception, and had a couple of nice runs, too. Shon Carson looks good out there, too - he's turning into a good receiver, btw. Jerrell Adams had a couple of nice long catches, including one that went for a TD (I believe the throw was from Dylan, i know it came from a double TE set) Dudes, this guy is a beast-in-the-making. Buster had a good practice, too - we're stacked at TE. I didn't have my roster with me, but we had a nice 47-yard field goal, too. I'm a little worried about the punt game. |

Offense looked pretty good as the scrimmage progressed. The defense looked good too, including the secondary. One things for sure-this team is going to have a mean pass rushing defensive line, probably even better than we thought if that's possible. The offensive line held up pretty good too.
I thought the punting game did fine. Got off a couple of good kicks, and the field goal unit was good, but maybe could have been a little better. All in all, not a bad day IMO. |
