They didn't have to, the timing of this shows that.

If they wanted to make a big deal out of this they would have done it in March or April and it would have been the focal point of this year's Masters. By doing it now they are showing that they did not cave to outside pressure and they they are admiting these women because they want to, not because they have to. Billy Payne has been quoted in the past as saying that he thought a women would be a member eventually.

Naturally, as a private club they reserved the right to be a mens only club forever but I guess the membership decided to make it coed. I think the CEO of IBM will be the next woman

Reminds me of the discussion we had on this a few months ago. We had a whole formal debate on it in my summer class. It's still a private club so they can made their own admission guidelines, but I'm very happy they've taken this step. And very happy for Darla Moore specifically!

Billy Payne has moved the National forward with the new media exposure(web,video game, more coverage of the 1st 2 days) so this does not come as a shock I'm glad they did it on their terms and not under the pressure from someone else.

regardless of the stature of the women invited the bottom line is that augusta finally caved.

If I had to guess.....never. Wasn't she the one that made that big stink about it and then said she "applied" to be a member when they came out and said there is no real application process...they pick the members. Bill Gates is pretty well shut out too with trying to buy himself in there years ago from what I remember..

I think you may be thinking of someone else.

Traditionally, the CEO of IBM is offered a membership. When Ginni Rometty became CEO of IBM there was a big question as to whether or not Augusta National was going to (or should) extend her an invite. I don't think she ever made any stink about it or ever even implied that she was interested.
