Clowney Named Finalist for Nagurski Award

University of South Carolina sophomore defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is one of five finalists for the 2012 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Charlotte Touchdown Club in conjunction with the Football Writers Association of America announced today.

The other finalists are Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones, Alabama defensive back Dee Milliner, Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o and Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner.

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy presented annually to the nation's top NCAA defensive football player will be awarded during the annual Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet presented by ACN, scheduled for Monday, December 3, at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte. University of Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly will give the keynote address for the banquet. University of Nebraska great Larry Jacobson will receive this year's Bronko Nagurski Legends Award presented by Florida East Coast Railway.

And you think Clowney hasn't done the same thing for us, and playing injured all season as well? For example, the fumble Clowney caused against UT saved the game for us. The double teams on Clowney all season freed other players to make plays for us. I am not an ND hater, I just realistically believe they typically don't play many good teams and are usually over-rated and exposed in a bowl game.

I don't think any other defensive player in the nation has a bigger impact on an offense in key plays and game planning than Clowney.

Clowney will win next year, but Te'o has: 6 int, 1 fumble, with solo and assisted tackles has almost 100 (9.6 per game), 1.5 sacks.

Plus he has a great story and fan appeal.

Honestly? No, Clowney hasn't done what he has for ND this season. With your other comment about him opening it up for others ... yes, he's definitely done that. However, you don't get awards for what you let OTHERS do.

I wonder if the fact that the award is given by the Charlotte Touchdown Club may have any impact with Clowney being from Rock Hill.

I'm not trying to say Clowney isn't a great player...but so far he has as far as stats are concerned 9.5 sacks, 4 QB hurries (I feel like he must have more though), 1 forced fumble, and 30 solo tackles with 12 assisted. Meaning he has 4 tackes per game.

He does seem to open things up for others and cause if not true qb hurries, the qb to go faster and cut off progressions, but you can't ignore numbers either.
