Who Is Really the Fastest?

I know that players and their coaches are sometimes "creative" with their times in the 40, so I just wanted to know from those that are students of the game and (specifically) recruiting...

Among our crop of running backs, who is the fastest and how do they rank in terms of pure afterburner speed?

Mike Davis seems fast and yet Brandon has a long stride which may mean he is even faster than Davis but would appear to be slower.

Meanwhile, I've heard that Carson has a set of wheels...

And Jamari Smith looks impressive in his clips, yet he looks a bit slow in the game films (may be a result of the poor quality of the clips and some seemed to be out of synch). Wonder what his true 40 time is.

So among Wilds, Davis, Carson, Salley, Blue, Smith, possibly Williams? (anyone else?)... How do they rank in terms of sheer speed? Do any of them have factors that overcome pure speed deficiencies (remember, Marcus was not a true speed burner yet was incredibly successful).

Wilds: Bruiser with good vision, decent speed, good hands. Future NFL Fullback most likely.
Carson: Fast. Really fast. Don't know how quick he is post ACL though.
Davis: Best vision of the group IMO, Great moves, good hands, Great burst through the hole, Breaks tackles. Overall a great talent.
Salley: Power back.
Smith: He breaks a lot of tackles and is pretty quick. His highlights are impressive.
Williams: 4.4 speed with frame to add weight. Good vision and hands.
We're set at RB for a few years.
Next year we're probably going to land Darell Scott from Havelock(Same school as Pharoh Cooper and Kendal Vickers). He'll be a star.

Marcus seemed to me that he lost a 1/4 to 1/2 of a step post-surgery and I wonder what we can expect of Carson since his speed is one of his big positives.

Don't know much about his injury and surgery and am curious as to what we can realistically expect from him in terms of speed.

Marcus would have improved as time went along had he not torn the other knee. Part of that is mental.

I agree with everything except Wilds is not going to play FB in the NFL. Most of the guys that play that position in the pros are converted TE or LB.

If we get Williams (which it looks like we will) it'll be between him and Carson. Carson pre-ACL ran around a 4.40. Williams has been clocked around a 4.45.

For the sake of comparison: How fast are Ace and Bruce (Obviously Byrd's faster still, but I'm curious about the short ones...)

I think Ace is an elusive 4.5 guy, and Bruce is closer to 4.4. Davis and Wilds are 4.5 guys. Carson was 4.4 or a shade better. Salley thought to run about a 4.65 if I remember. Williams has run towards 4.4, and Smith has a posted time of 4.56. Byrd has an electronically timed 4.26, but seems a straight-line runner unlike Ace or Bruce. Williams seems on film to have good vision to complement his speed. I'd probably prefer him with a blocker in front, Bruce with a step, Ace with a broken field, Wilds with a linebacker to beat for 5, and Davis after breaking to the second level. A good set of options to have. I like Conner's speed to the down marker, just wish he were more aware where it is.

FYI...Cory Boyd timed 4.51 at the NFL combines. I think Marcus and Cory were about the same...Wilds is faster than both getting outside...not sure the 40 shows this. Kenny Miles would probably time about the same.
Lots of shorter guys look faster because their legs are moving faster...just saying.

Carson is the fastest of the current Rbs and Williams will be the fastest probably when he comes in he is expected the be a pace changer to wilds/Davis.
