The reason I ask is because at the christmas sevice the preacher told a story about a guy that had been blind since birth and at the age of 51 had surgery that gave him site. This intruiged me and got me thinking would they know what they were looking at if they were given a math problem or would they simply say, "oh okay so that what that looks like." Kind of a random thought during the serivce.

Well, the person wouldn't be able to read the number, but they would know the answer if you read it to them. Once they learn to read, they probably would be better at it than me.

I would be more fascinated with what they thought things looked like, versus what they would see if given sight. For instance, in the situation described, the person might be married. Suppose they had the operation, and then thought that their wife was the ugliest thing ever after they could see. Maybe the person had to fly a lot. What if they developed a fear of flying because they can now see how high they really are.

I had those thoughts also, but that math one stuck out. How does a blind person imagin wha things looks like? that would be cool to find out. Anyone know a blind person?

Imagine being blind then getting sight and having sex for the first time.. everything they imagined, or awkward?

I assumed that that person looking at numbers and letters the first time would be a bit like me looking at Chinese characters.

Except that they would have understanding of syntax and other rules and sublties of the English language from speaking the language when they were blind.

There have been great blind mathematicians in the past, long before any recognised system of notation for the blind student existed, notably of course Nicholas Saunderson, Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge in the early eighteenth century. He worked out his arithmetical, algebraical, and geometrical problems on a square board, itself divided into smaller squares, with a hole in each square in which Saunderson placed pegs. Less outstanding than Saunderson, but worthy of mention, was Herr Weissenberg (born 1756), who was fortunate in having a very enterprising tutor, who taught him algebra, trigonometry, and geometry, and who modified Saunderson’s board for his young pupil, introducing certain improvements. Later on, the board was still further modified by Valentine Hauy, of the Institution des Jeunes Aveugles.

When I was younger I sold stereos and had a deaf couple come in. After lots of notes back and forth they started laughing. They passed me a note that said "you are wondering why deaf people are buying a stereo. We feel the music."

As far as blind folks understanding math, I can't figure it out and I can see it just fine.
