Default Which grill between these 2?

I am purchasing a new grill tomorrow- help me decide on which to buy. We grill out about 3-4 times a week and my small charcoal grill rusted out completely after almost 2 years of use.

Although I have always owned charcoal grills, I am switching to gas- mainly for cost reasons. Convenience factor will be nice, too.

Not looking to break the bank, so I am staying in the $150-175ish range. I know it is nowhere near enough to get a grill that will last a long time, but it should get me something to last another 3-4 years.

I have narrowed it down to 2 grills, one at Lowes and the other is at Sears. Which do you think is best, or suggest another grill in my price range that I should check out.

Thanks!

Nexgrill at Sears for $159

Char-Griller at Lowes for $169

You will get a lot more grill for just $50 more. The gas grill will help you out during storm season when we are out of power too. Unfortunately it is out of season now. You wil have a much better selection come April.

Looked at a Weber grill. They get good ratings and you may be able to find one within your budget.

While Weber is a great grill and will last, I don't think you're going to find a gas one for under 400. At least not one of a similar size to the above grills.

My sister gave me a Charbroil stainless steel grill from Lowes. Had it for almost 5 years with no problems. I know it was under 200.

Gas grills today have become essentially disposable. Yes, there are some great top of the line one out there. I found that it made more sense for me to buy one for under $300 and just plan on keeping it for 3 years. Then I get the fun of buying myself a new toy. I can buy a brand new grill for less than the cost of replacing a few burners. This greatly reduces the stress of having to closely care for one. Odd Florida storm pop up? No worries about the grill getting wet! It wont last anyway.

I have had my current cooker, a Char-Broil, for 4 years now. Stainless steel, 5 regular burners, 1 searing burner, 1 outside stove burner. I paid $269 for it at Wally World at a sale. It is $100 more than that right now. Home Depot has them for $329. This is why I suggest waiting a few months if possible.

This is it:

BTW, the outside burner is really a necessity down here. You will need it to cook and boil water when you are out of power for a week or so post storm. to that end you will need at least 2 propane tanks. I keep 3. The burner is also great for frying fish and such. Doesn't smell up the house. Additionally, I have grown fond of doing a reverse sear with my steaks. I warm them gently in the closed grill and then finish with a sear in a super hot cast iron skillet on that burner. Would make too much smoke in the house.

5 burners is overkill for what I need to do and honestly, the more features a grill has at that price point kind of scares me anyhow- they have to make up for the cost somewhere, and it is usually in cheaper materials. Both grills I am looking at have side burners as well, although I would feel comfortable boiling water on the main grill should I need to in emergency.

I'm also only expecting it to last 3-4 years, so that is why I am not making such a huge investment.

I also don't really have the luxury of waiting as my grill completely rusted out and I junked it yesterday...and seeing as we grill out 3-4 times a week minimum, I need something today haha!

Thanks Mel, but Weber is really out of my price range right now. Weber's charcoal grills are more expensive than some of these cheaper gas grills!

Seriously though, the Weber basic gas grills start around $350 with most being between $600-1500. Maybe some day!

Cola, what the larger number of burners does for you is to give you a larger area of indirect cooking. This means slow roasting of meats and of doing good BBQ. I can fire up my outside burners, cover them with wood chips, and have some pork butts and shoulders in the center smoking at 175-200. You just can't do that with a smaller grill. In essence it gives me a grill, an outdoor oven, and a smoker all rolled into one. Now if I am just wanting to do burgers and dogs and such a smaller model would do fine with direct heat. This, however, is what I like to be able to do:

I burn mine on a Broilmaster, I use two, one in the city one on the farm and except for burner rebuilds, they are bullit proof for 20 years or so. nice deep grillin chamber.

I think you just have to get creative on a smaller grill, because my neighbor and I smoke all the time on his 3 burner. One burner on under a pan of chips, then on the far end have a shallow pan of water with a grate on top of that with your meat. Never fails us! Only thing we sometimes have to do is rotate the meat once to aim for a smoke ring.

I have a 3 burner grill from LOWE'S for about a year now. Love it.

It looks almost identical to the nexgrill but I got it cheaper than the 179.00 listed with my store credit card.

Went in today again and saw this one...somehow looked over it before. I liked it for the price and it does seem to be near the NexGrill. Only thing that I didn't like about it was the large open gap where the hood hinges in the back...I will be doing some minor smoking and that would hurt me a good bit.

if you can't afford a Weber (the Genesis series, that E-310 especially, is amazing quality), go with the NexGrill. Worked at Lowes for a long time, the Char-Griller line is mediocre at best. NexGrill (we actually had 1 or 2 types in-store) seemed better quality at a better price. Just my $0.02

Edit: if you go the Weber route in the future, get the E-330 at the very least, same as the 310, but it has a side burner. Also has "sear station" burner. You can boost the heat kinda 'on-demand' for searing if you'd like, but that's your call
