http://www.greenvilleonline.com/arti...B-NFL-prospect
Three days removed from his team’s last-second victory against Michigan in the Outback Bowl, South Carolina football Steve Spurrier said backup quarterback Dylan Thompson could play in the NFL. Speaking in response to a question from ESPN radio talk show host Colin Cowherd about college quarterbacks with NFL potential, Spurrier said, “We’ve got a kid down here that is only a sophomore, Dylan Thompson, who I think is going to have a chance. He is right around 6-3 ˝ and can move a little bit, stay in the pocket and all that kind of stuff.” Thompson, the backup to junior Connor Shaw, started two games this season -- against East Carolina and Clemson. He passed for more than 300 yards in both. In the 27-17 victory against the archrival Tigers, Thompson completed 23 of 41 passes for 310 yards with three touchdowns. 'Thompson also played a big role in the Gamecocks’ 33-28 bowl win, throwing a 32-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Bruce Ellington with 11 seconds remaining. He had replaced Shaw, who left with an injury and underwent ankle surgery today. Thompson completed seven of 10 passes for 117 yards with two touchdowns in the game and finished the season 66-for-127 for 1,027 yards with 10 touchdowns and two interceptions. The former Boiling Springs High standout is listed as 6-foot-3 and 217 pounds. If Shaw is unable to participate in spring practice, Thompson would enter as the team’s No. 1 quarterback for those workouts. Shaw, who also dealt with a cracked bone in his right scapula in 2012, also had a solid season, completing 154 of 228 passes for 1,956 yards with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He rushed for 435 yards and three touchdowns. __________________________________________________ ___________ The purpose of this thread is to quote what Spurrier just said earlier today. I think both Shaw and Thompson are starting caliber quarterbacks, and so does SOS. However, he just called Thompson an NFL prospect. That's Spurrier. Not me. I think he'll use them both next year, but it's hard not to think Thompson will be the starter in view of what he just said. I didn't want to post this on another thread because it would be like trying to one up people who differ with my opinion.

I will preface that I love Connor Shaw. I think the boy has consistently played better than any QB I can really remember watching in my 29 years.
But I do think Dylan Thompson is the better NFL prospect at QB. If these boys can keep the team first, and not let this get personal, things will be really scary next year. |

My favorite quarterbacks are the ones sitting in armchairs.

I love the armchair armchair quarterbacks who question the armchair quarterbacks questioning the actual quarterbacks.

me4usc,
I listened to those comments and I thought they were awesome. Spurrier was definitely being very complimentary of Dylan and that would be amazing for Dylan to end up getting a shot at the NFL since we haven't had that in a long. You said it is "hard to think Thompson will not be the starter next year." But since Spurrier hasn't named Dylan the starter, just as he hasn't named Connor the starter, I am interested in what you will think about our coaches decision IF he ends up going with Connor next year? I am not saying it will happen. No one knows at this point. I am just curious as to if you will fully support Spurrier's decision regardless of who ends up starting next year? For example, I will not think twice about it regardless of which QB Spurrier chooses next year. Why? Because I know he sees practices, talks with the players, and knows who should play QB much more than I do. So if Spurrier did choose Connor Shaw, would you feel the same way? This really is meant as a sincere question and not a flame. |

Thompson is a Spurrier QB. All he wants is a QB to stay in the pocket and throw the ball. Aka why we won that game because Thompson stayed in the pocket took the hit and threw the ball for a TD!

I know. Isn't it amazing? Now I see why quarterbacks want to come to Carolina, and they should want to come even more seeing what the coaching staff has been able to accomplish with these young men. It is beyond remarkable.

It's good to see Spurrier getting a chance to talk up the program and our QB's on a national level. His comments on Dylan are spot on with my thoughts about him essentially being prototypical of what you're looking for in a QB.

I think Shaw is a lot like a Russell Wilson or a Drew Brees type QB. Dylan more like a Phillip Rivers or Andy Dalton. (I think those height comparisons are fair, not commenting on success in the NFL)
Both will have a good opportunity to prove themselves with us for a while yet, which I am happy about. |

I guess Spurrier grew tired of all the debate too. Pretty well just put the dagger in for team "armchair coach".
