Yeh, weird thread title. I was in conversation with an Alabama fan this week, and he said that if that RB would have been Richardson, that Clowney would have been the one to get popped.
Now, I had to argue in our favor, because I believe no matter who was back there, they were going to get hit, and HIT HARD. So I know it is a hypothetical, but, do you believe that same type of hit would have occurred if it was Richardson back there? I do, and honestly, I believe it didn't matter if the jolly green giant was getting the ball off to him, he was about to get popped. His eyes were on the ball the entire time. |

Clowney came through the line untouched and was full bore into the running back before they even completed the handoff. No chance.

When you are his size and with that speed, if you come through the line untouched, it doesn't make any difference who is getting hit.

Cool, this needed a new thread instead of being discussed in one of the other 57 threads about The Hit. I can't believe it's been 6 days and no one has mentioned that his eyes were following the ball the entire time. Too...much...sarcasm. Must...type slowly...

The thread is mainly about the Alabama fan, and saying if it was an SEC back or Richardson it would not have happened, but thanks for being that way.

I don't care if Erik Dickerson, Bo Jackson, or Hershel Walker (or all 3 combined) was back there running the ball...the result would have been a plowed RB and pulverizing hit. The fumble depends on the ability of each, maybe.
When a force with that mass is moving so quickly at a nearly stationary object, they are a practice dummy. Whether they are a 150lb or 200lb practice dummy is the only difference. Your friend is out of his mind.

Yeah, even a RB as big as Richardson would have been leveled being off balance and not set. You could knock down the Hulk if he were off balance and feet not set.

At the moment of the hit the RB was concentrating on the securing the football, not delivering a blow. No RB delivers punishment at that specific moment, so the defender will always have the drop on the RB. Always. Period.

If Clowney had a twin/clone who was getting that handoff at that same moment in time and Clowney the defender hit said twin/clone - Clowney clone would have been leveled. Timing of the handoff had a lot to do with it an the fact that the RB was kind of a sitting duck....wonderfully so especially since the RB had speared Clowney in the balls prior in the game. Ray Lewis would've gone to the turf is he was the RB.....

yea right. NO rb expects a linemen to meet them 8 yards behind the line at full steam.
it wouldn't have been as violent but it still would have separated him from the ball. |

PROOF: Remember that hit Sheldon Brown put on Reggie Bush? Same thing. Running back's attention diverted elsewhere and the defender coming in full bore!

No RB would have had a chance unless they chose to avoid the hit by not taking the handoff. There was no time to respond at all. Half of a step quicker and JD would have taken the handoff from the QB.
The only way the outcome is different is if the RB sees him coming and says "Nope...I'm not touching that football."

I have always liked Richardson n he is a beast, but he is all of 5'9 225 and JC is 6'4 240!!! On top of that, JC was running full speed during that hit.. No way in hell Richardson would of absorbed that hit any better then the Michigan rb did.. It is common sense.. Not being a homer just realist..
