Default Dave Ramsey

Just tossing a thread out there to see if any others follow Dave Ramsey. It's done wonders for my family so I thought I'd pass his web link along for others to check out.

How did he help you? He seems to be a good motivator, but I'm highly skeptical of the returns he claims to have achieved in the stock market. If he could do that he would be running a hedge fund and be a billionaire instead of a hard-selling millionaire. Seems like the "get out of debt" stuff can't really harm you and he seems a little more sophisticated that suze orman at least. Although most "experts" would recommend paying off the loans with the highest rates first and snowballing that way, but I can see how his method would keep people motivated.

This sounds like financial security tips for the upper middle class.

I can't even get past baby step 1.

You can save up a grand dude. Sign up for one of those accounts that transfers a buck everytime you use your debit card and you'll see how fast it adds up. Just don't buy multiple headsets. That will mess up your budget.

this is the point, his focus is on changing your spending habits, actually seeing "signifigant" change and using that to motivate you, putting an extra $100 bucks a month against a 30k car loan kinda feels like peeing in the wind, the same money applied to a $800 best buy card bill that you were only paying the minimum payment on knocks it out relativly quickly...thus "making progress" then you take that min payment and add it to your surplus and make that extra on the next smallest debt...its more of a psychological thing than anything else.

Getting rid of debt. His Total Money Makeover book was an eye opener and a quick read. It helps you develop a gameplan instead of winging it. I did everything he suggested. I sold my truck, paid $800 for a car with 208K miles on it and two years later I'm still driving it. It has almost 244K on it now. I used to struggle with money around Christmas time and use credit cards to buy gifts, now I pay cash for the gifts and have no credit cards. It really gives you peace.

It's just not practical for me to use the cash method that he suggest. Otherwise, the wife and I have taken FPU and follow his advice as much as possible. He has good guidelines to follow and keeping a budget does wonders for your finances.

just like the "snowball effect", the using of cash is more about the mental aspect of it, for most people it is mentally easier swipe a card without thinking about actually spending money than it is to hand cash out

LOL. I basically agree with Yancey. But I suppose if he motivates you or you need really simple rules of thumb to follow, whatever works is ok. Clark Howard or one of those other guys will tell you all the same stuff for free. He's sort of patronizing but not harmful.

wifes employer offered the class "financial peace". i liked it, it has helped. we are on our way to being debt free. the class was 13 sessions. i have the cd's in my truck and listen to them often picking up on things i might have missed. i like his product and think it is well worth the listen.

The problem with people like Dave Ramsey is that he fails to recognize many people are not in debt because they get coffee from Starbucks everyday...they're in debt because of an unforeseen expense...a hospital stay, losing a job, whatever.
