Ouch. How much did this new coach get? Personally I thought Dooley should have remained there at least another year. His offense was great. He needed time to assemble a defense.

I saw somewhere they had 21 million going to debt collections last year, and the SEC cut them a check for 20.7 million. So basically, they were upside down from the conference revenue standpoint, and that's just what they owe, not salaries to current people.

Where was the Vol fan that was posting on here...I'm sure he'd have an interesting take.

Sounds a lot like the way Hyman talked when he was in his first year here. Note that they had a $4 million dollar deficit after transfering $7 million to the university general fund. Still, it sucks to hire a lame kiffin when the great recession is just getting started.

i am thankful for eric hyman. yes, he is at a competitor, but he surely turned our athletic dept around. He paved the way for Ray and beyond. At this point, i think the band not travelling to NYC wasnt really that big of a deal.

on another note, wouldn't it just be a total embarrassment if a decision was made for the UT Band not to travel for away games.

Probably so, the difference is what are the interest rates, the asset's actual value, and how much we have going out per year vs. how much we pay out.

I don't know if that's accurate, but 100 million is pretty reasonable for a top tier program that's been doing a lot of building, the 200 million number for UT isn't that crazy on it's own either... the problem is they have budget shortfalls because of things like the declining attendance which has left them with less than 2 million in cash reserves, which is ridiculous...

Huge debt is ok if you have a sustainable means for paying it off... However, this article points out that UT's revenue stream is unsustainable without winning championships. you could argue why this is true, but I think it's safe to say they have a very withholding fan-base (they would never get 80,000 to a game during an 0-11 season). 89,000 is still a huge number, but when it's down from a 107,000 it really hurts your budget (I just did a conservative estimate based on a $35/ticket, that would mean they're coming up about $6 million short just on ticket sales)


EDIT: HOLY CRAP, just did the math in my head... they are paying over 10% interest on those loans, hahahah, no way they should be paying more than 8%. They are getting hosed.

when you also consider their insane recruiting budget because they have no instate talent, and the fact they just had to fire a coach, this is no bueno for UT.... they're not going to be able to build anything significant for quite a while. I'll raise a glass to that.
