Derrick Green to Michigan, Tennessee weeps

Hey all-

We were all pretty excited that Green chose Michigan on Saturday, and many of us got almost as much joy at seeing the despair of some Vol fans. Interested to hear how they are viewed by their own conference. There is long-standing antipathy between our two fan bases because A. Charles Woodson won the Heisman over his holiness Peyton Manning, and B. Phil Fulmer voted us 5th in the final 1997 poll, helping insure that Nebraska would split the national championship with us.

Any thoughts? (I know Auburn lost out on him too, but we don't really have any history with them, except losing a bowl game to a Bo Jackson team in a fun-filled 9-7 affair. That was stolen from us due to the clock not being stopped before our kicker could try what would have been a game-winning 42 yard field goal. But I digress...)

My thoughts on your post is that, in the current state of affairs, UM offers the most program stability and going by that standard alone would be the logical choice of the 3 mentioned. I do expect both Aub and Tenn to bounce back in a few seasons.

UT was at one point a feared rival. Last year they might have had as much offensive talent as any team in the SEC, yet they had to beat Kentucky just to go 7-5. Tennessee is not loaded with in state talent so they have, in the past, had success in recruiting nationally. That is changing.

Butch Jones has an uphill climb to recruit and their athletic department has incredible debt. There are some good UT fans that post here, but most of the Orange Nation still thinks they are competing with Alabama when in fact they aren't the best team in their own state anymore. They aren't top four in the east either.

Still, it's fun to see them struggle with mediocrity. Both fan bases do share a mutual dislike for Kiffin.

Hope Green is a star for you guys. Tell him to buckle his chin strap if we see you in the BCS next year. Michigan running backs helmets...oh never mind.

One of the recruiting shows mentioned that he was going to Mich in spite of one of their running backs being "spiked by Clowney". Just thought it was funny.

Any educated Vol fan knew that Green was going to Michigan. Read my posts in his thread here on Cockytalk for proof. Volnation is one of the largest fan sites on the internet so it is a cesspool for some idiotic fans. Green would have been a huge surprise and I am honestly impressed we stayed in it to the end.

Charles Woodson winning the Heisman was a joke and everyone knows it, but lets not get into that argument.

Congrats to Michigan, I for one enjoy watching them be good, and even moreso now that Scum Meyer is in Columbus.

I am going to go watch the 2002 Citrus Bowl now to make myself feel better.

I've said it on this website 100 times but recruiting hasn't fallen off near as much as SC fans want to believe. We have made two terrible coaching hires, have had increadible instability and had AWFUL player development.

If we can just get a solid football coach back on Rocky top the wins will come.

What happened to Auburn and Tennessee?
Since the 2008 football season, the Tigers and Vols have had a combined seven different coaches. They are two of the SEC’s biggest underachievers and one of the obvious reasons has been coaching, because both programs recruit at an elite level. Auburn has the 10th best roster in the nation just behind Ohio State and Oklahoma and just ahead of Michigan and Notre Dame. Tennessee is 14th nationally, just ahead of Oregon and Clemson and just behind Miami since 2008. Needless to say, the coaching has been the issue. Auburn is just 17-23 in league play over that span — including an 8-0 national championship season — and the Vols are even worse at 12-28. Fans have been moaning that both programs haven’t been recruiting at a level required to win in the SEC (especially in Knoxville). The facts indicate this couldn’t be further from the truth. Top 20 classes, most of which were ranked in the top half of the SEC, were not the problem, the coaching was. According to the rankings, both rosters roster are more talented than South Carolina, Texas A&M, Arkansas and Missouri.

Butch is about to have an increadible close to this recruiting class and if he can start winning some important games you will see TN to begin to rise just like every other Power that has slipped up from time to time!

I still say UT has 2 more losing seasons before they get guys in the fold and become solid enough to win in the SEC. Lost too many offensive weapons, even with solid recruiting, its gonna take a while. The landscape has changed. Vandy is on the rise and much further along than UT, we are no longer a write off w, kenucky however is still pathetic and should be excused from the SEC. Ga and Fl are back. So really you are in vandy's spot above kentucky. Its gonna be fun to watch (for me bc i hate UT).

Woodson was the best college football player I've ever seen in person, period. And he's done OK in the NFL, as well. Bottom line is both guys are going straight to the HOF as one of the best players ever to play their position-either would have won the Heisman easily in most years.

LMAO... yall STILL are delusional. Ya'll have been garbage for the better half of a decade, are not in a talent rich state (best are in west tenn), and clearly no recruits remember the "good ol days".. UT will not be a 8 win team again for 4/5 years, and sadly I never see ya'll becoming that "power" again....

..Hell you aren't even the best football school in your own state anymore. Getting that good talent these past 5 years means jack shit, your recruiting paid you ZERO dividends- look at how bad off your athletic dept is...

Butch was a desperation hire.. not a bad hire, but once again not close to who yall wanted originally (more unrealistic expectations by UcheaT fans lol), and IMO he is not a good fit for UT or the current state of the program.. Zero SEC ties, only been a major HC for 3 years (at Cinci), and has not proven he can compete in the SEC recruitingwise (James Franklin can recruit circles around Butch).
Also, Butch is an offensive guy.. your offense has been good/great lately, and yall still sucked... The offense wasn't the problem but will be getting much worse, losing lots of talent. These next few years could be very ugly.

I liked the Vols reaction after that "state of the program" article, many Vol fans finally realized what we all knew.. add to that the new report about UT's debt- please understand, for Butch's sake, that ya'll will most likely have a 7-8-9 yearly win ceiling AT MOST the rest of this decade, provided you schedule accordingly.. please do not expect to be a "power" again for a long long long time, that is completely unrealistic.

So much fail, how and why is 7/8 wins our ceiling? Probably the next 2 to 3 years yes but no one can predict further than that and there is no reason our program can't get back to the elite level.

We are recruiting fine and I will be back in this thread on Signing day with some proof Butch can get that done.

We just need stability and good FOOTBALL coaching. Hopefully Butch Jones give us that....if he can't, then yes I agree it will be another 4-5 years of mediocrity then starting over again.

But I have a good feeling about Butch Jones actually.

Agreed...there is a lot of pressure...it only makes the situation worse.

It will be interesting what attendance is this year...should see a big spike up. But we need a couple decent wins to keep people on board into 2014.

I actually detailed the reasons why there is a very good chance you will never get back to that "elite level". This is a vastly different situation from, for example, Bama, who has a talent rich state. I didn't even mention how in the past, UT stole recruits from nearby states- and now those kids are staying home.
