The Pope Resigns!
Not putting a political spin on it, but it is a very rare event:
(CBS/AP) - Vatican officials said Monday that Pope Benedict XVI had announced to his senior clergy that he would resign his position as the head of the Catholic Church on February 28, according to news agency reports. Benedict has dealt with health issues for some time, and the 85-year-old announced his decision in Latin during a meeting of Vatican cardinals Monday morning, according to the Associated Press. He said that because of his advanced age and diminishing strength, he didn't feel he could carry on the job, the AP said.

I read somewhere that that a high ranking cardinal in Germany, had given consent to the morning after pill and since the pope was German he wanted to avoid a scandal. Have no idea if true but saw it somewhere.

I honestly did not think this was possible/allowed. He isn't a head coach he is the Pope. This is the Catholic Church. This whole Pope thing is kind of a big deal.

It is a pretty bid deal though. I wonder how long it will be before there is a hispanic Pope since that demographic makes up a rather large number of worldwide Catholics? At least with him retiring they will have time to meet and find a suitable replacement. The whole ceremonial thing with the white smoke and stuff is pretty neat. |
