I think they were going for Porsche Cayenne, Saturn Vue, Lexus RX 350, Infiniti EX35, Acura RDX or Nissan Murano. The section of vehicle they just call crossovers. The thing is Jeep Cherokee already had a distinctive look , why not create a Jeep crossover?
