Default Former UNC player ties counselors to no-show classes

Quote:
A key UNC football player in the NCAA’s investigation into improper benefits says he was led by academic counselors to four no-show classes and that the academic environment for athletes at the university was “a scam.”
Michael McAdoo was kicked off the Tar Heel football team in 2010 because of violations related to having a tutor do improper work on three term papers. When he sued to get back on a year later, claiming a breach of contract, the university fought back: It had kept him on his athletic scholarship.

Full text, Mary Willingham statement in NCAA lawsuit.

Now, it appears that the NCAA is staying out of UNC because they are being sued by players that think they should be paid. The NCAA defense is that the players got a free education. If a link can be proved that schools such as UNC placed players in no show classes, thereby providing a worthless education, that defense may not work.

Interestingly, UNC's defense appears to come down to saying that there were fraud classes available to all students, which questions their overall academic integrity.

Now, before we get to the inevitable "All schools do it" comment, let's remember that UNC, and apologists such as Dick Vitale, brag on UNC graduating their players and doing things the "Carolina Way."

All schools certainly don't do that.

I'm surrounded by UNC fans and believe me when I say they are outraged...at Mary Willingham. They all seem to agree on two things:
1. She is a trouble-maker who has an ax to grind.
2. These things go on at every university.

Agreed! When there is so much evidence already (ie, smoke) and NO one from the NCAA believes there is a fire!

It's like saying "where's my shoe?" And all your buddies look up to the sky and say "not up here!"

Guys, that's not it at all. Think about it.

If the NCAA goes after UNC for this, they are in effect saying that the players in the other suit are correct. They would be endorsing Willingham, who is being used by the other side.

Burn down the NCAA, but whatever you put back in it's place cannot reduce this problem until players are paid.

Oh, what a web we weave when, at first, we attempt to deceive.
Been 50 yrs, but UNC's chickens are finally comin' home to roost.
Not game hens and gamecocks, mind you, just yard chickens.
Hey, Hounds of Hell, they're baby blue, but I'll bet they're edible.

If this was another school without the 'prestige' of UNC basketball, the NCAA would have already parked their bus in the parking lot. Not having the NCAA investigate these claims is ridiculous.

^^ This.

UConn was busted for far less serious offenses, and NOTHING has happened to UNC yet.

If I were UConn I'd sue.

I disagree: going after UNC does the total opposite, IMO. How many universities are there under the NCAA's purview? These kind of improprieties are liable to happen everywhere. The argument above has already been made that they probably do happen all the time. Just like improprieties within collegiate athletics. Often-times they go unnoticed: when they are discovered, it's up to the NCAA to enforce it's own rules by punishing those responsible.

Same thing with academic improprieties: just one university - even as academically held in high standard as UNC apparently is - is not the entire NCAA. It cannot be argued IMO very strongly that because 1 college gave bogus classes in 1 or 2 courses, that therefore ALL colleges are doing it.

But if the NCAA turns it's shoulder and responsibility away from punishing UNC for this, THEN can the argument be made in court that the perception that valuable educations are being given for free to student-athletes is a hoax. Only by fiercely enforcing the rules and standards by severely punishing UNC - and any other university that is caught - for these issues will the NCAA be able to support it's own contention that it seeks only the best higher educations for the students and student-athletes that attend it's institutions....

So..by investigating UNC using Willingham's statements....and then saying in court that same statements are not correct....that has no problem for the NCAA at all?
