Spurrier is elite.

South Carolina is elite.

Posters that disagree with this on a USC board are not elite. They are moribund ersatz fans.

Well, apparently the high profile recruits disagree with you, as both of those programs you mentioned are in the top 10 in the recruiting rankings.

I guess Clowney, Lattiomore, are not a top recruit?

Never said they weren't, not even close. Read the post I quoted and my post again. But let me rephrase that... I guess a lot of high profile recruits disagree with him, hence their high ranking.

That may be true.

What is surprising, however, is that fans of our own Gamecock football team are willing to assert we are not elite so they can win an argument.

How about this? Support the Gamecocks. Recruiting signing day is just a few days away.

Clemson is not elite. They have dabo as their coach.

Not to be argumentative, but a coach doesn't make your program elite or non-elite. When Howard Schnellenberger went to Florida Atlantic, it didn't make them elite and when Alabama had DuBose, it wasn't suddenly not elite.

Teams typically only played 10 or 11 games most seasons back then anyways, so 8 wins wasn't what it is today.

I think you may have missed the part where I said the stage was set for him. I never said Florida had an elite football program before he arrived. For starters, while Florida was mediocre throughout much of its history, they fielded very good teams in the 80's. They finished 6, 3, and 5 (AP) in 83, 84, and 85, and handed the eventual nationals champs Miami their only loss in 1983. In addition, Charley Pell is credited with his fundraising efforts (and creation of the Bull Gator club) that set the University on sound financial footing and contributed signicicantly to facility improvements to the athletic program, including the training facility, Florida field (when the first luxury boxes were added and the stadium was expanded). All improvements that he pushed for and got completed. So again, I'll reiterate, the stage was set for Spurrier (and I'm sure he would admit as much), just as it appears he is setting the stage for USC. That doesn't take anything away from what he did, because without him Florida may not be where it is today and has been.

From my limited understanding of the USC football program, I understand he has pushed for many improvements to the athletic facilities and he has helped increase alumni donation as and support. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Also, he is winning at USC but hasn't won any significant Championships, yet (much like Charley Pell at Florida). So like I said, even if he doesn't do anything truly elite at USC (he may), he is certainly setting the stage for it to potentially happen with the next coach.

Pretty much agree with most of this. I will say UF was not elite before SOS, as they won no championships prior. (The one they won was pulled from them by the SEC). He will probably be the first to tell you that timing is everything, and his timing to go to UF was great...due to the things you mentioned along with UGA having Goff, Donnan, etc..that he owned, Auburn having some not so good year, LSU being below average...and really it was between UF and UT every year.

The most important coach in the history of USC's program, IMHO, will be the next one. Will he make the program a top program in the country, or do we back slide?

Schellenberger never was an elite coach.

Bear Bryant and Steve Spurrier are elite coaches.

We have Spurrier. We are elite.

Alabama under Shula was not elite. Exhibit 1.

Alabama the team was not elite, the program was, however. That's how they were able to hire the coach and recruit the players needed to go undefeated in the regular season only 2 years later and win a NC only 3 years later.

Man, screw Lawing. Taking a lateral move with a divisional opponent. I really don't care what his deal was. He is real busy trying to get some SC recruits to Florida. Just a bad move by him.

That is all.

Why is that?

Are they the more 'elite' fans?
