Junior college cornerback Ronnie Martin has signed a national letter of intent with the University of South Carolina, it was announced today.

Martin, a 5-10, 180-pounder from Spartanburg, S.C., originally signed with the Gamecocks in February 2011. He has spent the past two seasons at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, Ga., where he was coached by Bert Williams. He saw limited playing time in 2012, as he was sidelined early in the season with a hamstring injury. In the three games prior to the injury, he logged 10 tackles and three interceptions, while forcing a pair of fumbles. He was regarded as the fifth-best junior college cornerback in the nation, according to 247Sports.

Martin played cornerback for Freddy Brown Sr. at Spartanburg High School, graduating in 2011. He participated in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas following his senior season. An all-state selection, Martin was regarded as a three-star prospect coming out of high school.

Martin is expected to arrive on the Columbia campus when the spring semester begins in January

I loved this guy coming out of high school and really thought he could be next in line at DBU, and was really bummed when he didn't make it in. I'll be looking forward to seeing his progress next year.

If he only played in 3 games can he apply for an injury hardship? If so that would give him 3 years here.

Yes, it was already stated on the previous page, that he will receive a medical hardship waiver for this year, and have 3 to play 3.

The high school coach freddie brown SR... Was that downtown Freddie Browns dad.... the receiver we had some years back.. maybe 6 or 7 years ago

Excited to see him.
I think he at least is a backup while McWilliams, Elder and Moody get another year bigger and stronger.
But who knows, we could have a lot of competition at corner and might have to move a guy or two to safety.
Get the best 11 on the field on defense.

Throw in Christian to what will be solid depth behind both Hampton and Legree next season. Legree will be the only senior at CB in '13, with Hampton a Jr., Christian will be a RS So., Elder, Moody, and McWilliams will be RS-Fr. I guess Martin will be like a RS So. himself. That's a 3.5-deep at CB for at least the '13 season. Incoming ATH commit Ali Groves could red-shirt...

Victor Hampton, Jimmy Legree, Ahmad Christian, Ronnie Martin, Rico McWilliams and either Moody/Elder will probably be our corner position this season.

I believe the looser of the Elder and Moody battle will move to Free Safety, both possibly could.

Between those guys along with Brison Williams, T.J Gurley, and Kadetrix Marcus at safety we will be solid.

The thing I like about our CB depth is that every one of them will have had a red-shirt year of development with the exception of Ronnie, who had 1.x years in JUCO and stands to get a year of eligibility back, so even he will have that 3rd year in USC's program that most JUCOs don't get when they transfer to major colleges. Will be a long time before we see any true freshmen playing at corner for us, unless we bring in another super-stud like a Gilmore.....
