Spacey plays Frank Underwood, the US Rep(D) and Majority Whip from Gaffney, SC, which is the 5th district. He is very powerful and the show is completely centered around what he is trying to accomplish in Washington, and how he plays people off against each other. He is also banging Kate Mara on the side, in return giving her scoops that she can break stories with the next day or immediately on Twitter, etc. The show starts with a new POTUS and the administration wants and education bill passed within the first 100 days. They appoint a particular congressman to head up the bill, but, immediately Frank sets out to convince him to give up the task and he gets himself appointed. The show takes off from there.

1 more episode to go. Things have certainly gotten interesting. I feel like everything is spiraling out of control and that the safe structure the show had built is crumbling. Frank seems to have overextended himself and there are a lot of loose ends out there.

Finally finished the season. I wish they would have completed the story arc more before the season ended, but I guess that is the point of a cliffhanger. I wonder if they will wait a whole year for season 2?

I've watched both the Netflix and the BBC versions and both are excellent. There's enough difference between the two that I think you can enjoy each for what it is without worrying about one spoiling the other. As for which is better, I gotta give the nod to BBC.
1. Spacey is very good but Ian Richardson is phenomenal. For Richardson it's one of those roles he was born to play. 2. BBC version moves more quickly. US versions of foreign series have a tendency to drag things out too long just to have an extra season. Netflix's version hasn't done that yet but I could see it happening. 3. The story itself is better suited to parlimentary government. 4. House of Commons debates are great! There have been no legislative debates in Netflix's version in the first season. A couple of clips from the BBC version: A bit of dressing down with the British understatement. First encounter with the reporter.

I like this show even with Spacey's accent being a distraction.

I finished the show a couple weeks ago. I can't wait for the 2nd season. The writing is incredible at times. There are some great lines.

I'm not enough of a cunning linguist to give a pronunciation through spelling but I'll give it a go. He says Gaff like gaffe and has a heavy accent on the Gaff syllable. We pronounce it like gaif with no accent...except heavy Southern.
