Our criminal justice system is in very sad shape. Drug property confiscation laws have influenced law enforcement to prioritize victimless crimes and de-emphasize violent crimes. Here, the fines for busting college kids for underage drinking influcence the city police department to seek revenue in this fashion. If you think about it, those kids are not hurting anyone and the officers could be doing something more productive.

It is a small town that doesn't have much infrastructure. The City of Columbia has a huge revenue deficit compared to the podunk town of Clemson.

The incident took place between "midnight and 1 a.m." Everyone in my chapter meeting received the message at 9:30 p.m. Not only did that cause a stir in the room but my phone started blowing up because people's parents got concerned.
The University wanted to implement a system that will alert everyone that is a student, faculty and staff member that some incident has occurred and in a timely manner. Eight hours is not a timely manner!

Everyone on campus keeps bringing this up, but everyone is overlooking the fact that maybe it wasn't reported right away. The school can't send out an alert if they don't know about it.

No offense but you really didn't give any reason as to why the ideas were bad, just that you don't like them. Not everyone is able to handle rules and following them with maturity. It's not a big deal that you like them our not. I attended school in a more dangerous court than columbia and we never had a violent crime on campus.

No one is restricting your right to when you complete your school work. That's kind of a silly answer to my post but that's your opinion and your haver that right to it. Unlike the PF, we can disagree and not resort to name calling and the like.

Yeah I was a little side tracked when I posted the original 8 to 9 hours haha.

Dr. Pastides will get something done about this. The campus needs to be more lit up overall. If I am thinking of the right area that the incident occurred, there is two lights? Maybe three? There needs to be a couple more call boxes along the way. But the mostly more lighting and better patrol.

Regardless of when the incident was reported, the Carolina Alert system is a joke! There are several occasions when many hours had passed before we were "properly" alerted...

I didnt feel like reading this entire thread but I read most of it. Im on my 4th year at USC, hopefully ill graduate in May. My house was broken into during the UGA game this year. I left my house around 2 to go to the game. I came home around 2am from the game. My tvs were gone. My computers were gone. Others valuables were gone. Once I calmed myself down and stopped yelling I called the cops. Ten minuets later after I calm down some more, I realized the cops still were not at my house!!!! I live right outside of 5pnts BTW. I called the station again and politely asked them where the hell the damn cops were. Lady from the stations response was "im sorry but most of our available units are handling other business in 5pnts right now". Long story short I waited 25mins for police man to show up to my house. The point im getting at is if the CPD would spend a little less time "patrolling" 5pnts for underage drinkers and start patrolling campus and responding to REAL crimes then our police system wouldn't be questioned.
So far in the past week there have been 2 shootings in 5pnts, 3 robberies and one rape/robbery incident.Official response???? Up the police force. The problem with that is CPD and campus PD ramp up the force for a few weeks then it drops back off. I say if you are going to commit to a presence in 5pnts and campus to prevent violence from happening then you need to keep it up and not let it drop off.
Another point, 5pnts/campus was subject to the same problem around the start of the fall semester last fall. CPD response? Increase the number of units patrolling for underage drinking to help prevent these crimes. This all came straight from Steve B's press/local resident questionnaire in front of the 5pnts fountain. Someone in the crowd then informed him that it was not the underage students that cause the problems. Its the loitering and the gangs that hang out down there at night.

Again, it is about campus safety. Not everyone is mature enough to handle the guidelines. As someone already said, you don't have to attend there if you don't like them. Cutting and stopping are two different ideas. If you don't like them, fine, but at least put forth some logical reasons as to why. The only poster that did was Floyd.

I just do not understand why restricting the freedoms of students should even be mentioned as an idea. It seems better lighting, plainly visible security cameras, and better patrolling would be the real solutions.

USC would get a very bad reputation among prospective students if they became like The Citadel or Bob Jones University, because thats just not the kind of school it is. It is fine if someone wants to go to a school that puts those restrictions in place, but thats not USC, and I for one am glad it is not.

That's fine. I attended USC and another school. They were very different for different reasons. USC was more of we don't care attitude and the other was not. It didn't scar me (not saying that you are making that point) and I am none the worse for it. It's just not as bad as people are making it out to be

Seems like a popular day for crime. My friends house on Pickens was broken into that same day. They took all 4 of their computers, 300 dollars in cash, 3 TVs and 1 car. Wow
