Got so bad I would need between 6 and 8 mg of Ativan to finally doze off...so then my wife found out and took my magic pills...sigh

I was just wondering if you are building up a tolerance to ambien or does it just knock you out. One more thing, how long does it take to work?

Thanks Mel

I do take them almost every night. At first they worked within 30 minutes of taking them, but my body has built up sort of a tolerance to them and I don't go to sleep right away; however, if I lay down within an hour of taking one I will fall asleep and I do not wake up groggy the next day - never have.

I did try for a while taking melatonin and valerian, but it never helped.

Lol. Actually, yes. I had taken an Ambien and at the same time was on Macys.com looking at some merchandise. I woke up the next morning and didn't remember right away that I actually ordered some stuff. It was actually stuff I needed, but I didn't remember right away. Now when I take the Ambien, my computer isn't on - just the tv and I usually fall asleep without the ambien walrus visiting me.

When I was a single mom years ago and under alot of stress my doctor put me on Elavil for sleep. It made me tired all day so I had to quit taking it. My doctor made me try everything before giving me Ambien. She even put me on Trazadone and that stopped me up despite the fact I was drinking a ton of water daily and eating alot of fiber so for that reason I quit taking the Trazadone. If I go to sleep later than usual and have to get up early the next day I won't take the Ambien and I notice that my sleep pattern is like it was before I started taking it. Maybe that means my body is used to it, I don't know.

Mel, what was the dose? A VERY low dose of 25mg is unlikely to cause that and if so any such side effects go away quickly.

Colacock- in this situation I didn't just look for a magic pill immediately. I've done pretty much all I can do. This has been a problem for probably about 6 years now.

I don't want to get on sleeping pills because I easily build tolerance to pills and that can get me in trouble...but sometimes I feel like I need a guaranteed shutdown to refresh.
It sounds like your problems stem from anxiety a very very common cause of sleeplessness and insomnia... Work on the anxiety and the sleep will come.

My girlfriend has fibro and sleep disorder and was prescribed Elavil and had a bad side effect where she had bad problems peeing. We looked up the side affects and sure it enough that was one of the serious side effects. She stopped taking it.
