Default Could Gamecocks be SEC East sleeper in 2017?

Food for thought in an otherwise dull period.

No real justification is provided other than "the East sucks so there's no reason the Gamecocks can't contend."

I think we can make some noise this year, but not sure if we can make it to Atlanta. 2018 will be our coming back party, though.

I think the skill positions on our offense is about as good as it can get with unlimited potential, but their success is going to hang on the OL. The defense should be better, so yes we can certainly contend for the east.

Default Re: Could Gamecocks be SEC East sleeper in 2017?

We could be. A quick Cliff Notes on 7 East teams & why we might beat them:
Florida: All Muschamps defenders are gone. QB situation is a cluster. UF travels to Columbia.
Georgia: Most likely favorite. But...we always play em tough. In Athens though.
Tennessee: They lost a TON. No QB. No RB or WR. Coach on hot seat. Beat em in 16.
Kentucky: In Columbia. I just cant fathom losing 4 straight to UK.
Vandy: Fiesty team but should be a nice home win.
Missouri: Team imploding.

Considering our West games are A&M (lost a ton and are in turmoil, no QB) and Arkansas (we match up wrll vs that style now) we may have the best shot at losing 1 in the East but still winning it.

Wr arent the favorite but with a quickly improving defense, future star at QB and pretty loaded at skill positions...we're one solid offensive line away from contending in the East.

Find it odd that we play Georgia so late. My hope is that injuries or a couple losses have them jumbled up later in the season. Think they, A&M and Clemson are the most likely losses at this point with NC State being a question mark. I know people might laugh but NC State did pretty well last year, and could have done better (maybe with a different kicker) but they crushed Vandy in their bowl game, so I believe they come ready to play on Sept. 2nd. Think Florida, Arkansas are both winnable games as long as OL can stay consistent through both. Kentucky I just don't think we lose to them at home for a 4th year in a row. Honestly hope we crush them for the last 3 years. Tennessee is in a bit of a fog and depending on how well they can get Guarantano acclimated to their offense, I think we hold the advantage despite playing in Knoxville. Vanderbilt and Missouri should be definite wins... Vanderbilt has gotten better but playing in Columbia should make the game a lot safer. Missouri is a mess right now, plus playing them early in the season helps too.

Think its safe to say that 8-9 wins are very possible and depending on the OL as well as the DL and Secondary, I think we can be a very dangerous team.

Odds are always pretty even that Georgia will have several suspended late in the season for various crimes. Might be a good thing we're playing them late.

IMO, LB was our worst position group last year. Missed assignments consistently and absolutely nobody with any speed. Walton couldn't run down my mother. We should have much better speed this year and with some good coaching, a much better group.

We have a lot of youth at LB but also some promising players, and it is hard to find a better pair than BAW and Skai.

Skai is a big upgrade over Walton or Holloman, especially in the speed department. The Pro Day times show why the D was not better - there were some really slow veterans in key roles. Skai masked the lack of foot speed at LB and it showed out last year when he was out.
