Default Past Gamecock QBS, and What their * rating would be today

Some guys like Ellis, Taneyhill, Petty come to mind here. Taneyhill was here when I was in High School, Petty was here when I was an adult, and Ellis when I first started following CFB when I was a kid. Now they didnít have recruiting services in those days that did star ratings. What would these guys have been ranked now, respectively? For the older timers, you can throw in Suggs and Grantz.

In my honest opinion Suggs would be hard to rate, he was a good high school player but if I remember right he pretty much showed up in Columbia and ask to get a shot.
You may not remember or know but Jeff Grantz was as good a baseball player as he was a football player and a lot of schools wanted him. I would have to say at least a Fo Star.
Ellis came from a big high school and set the world on fire during his time there. Everyone wanted him. Five Star.
Tanneyhill also came from a big high school in Pa. Everyone wanted him including Bama, psu, osu ect ect. Five Star.
Phil Petty, I could be wrong on this one but Phil really wasnt that highly recruited. I dont remember a lot of fanfare around his arrival to Columbia. Tree Star at best.

I think you nailed it. I'm not sure if Tannyhill would have made it to a 5* but he definitely would have been an Elite 11 4*.

If I remember Newton was a big catch for the Gamecocks. He was a dual threat type QB but most of the programs recruited him as a WR or DB. Holtz got him and just about played him at every poisiton possible. The HBC did the same. I want to say he was a Fo Star type.

To be honest those were pretty accurate rankings. Connor really only played QB for two years and Dylan had zero power 5 offers.

Yep, he was exactly what Holtz looked for in a QB. He loved a QB that could run and passing skills, though Newton wasn't a bad passer, was not at the top of his priority list. Spurrier asked him to play QB when Blake was struggling behind a totally inept John Hunt o-line.

..Truth be told, if Shaw would have been 6ft 2in tall he would have at least been a Fo Star. He had a really good high school career running an option syle offense. But he had the IT factor, he was a leader.

Suggs was 5'9" and I have no doubt that if he were over 6'00", he would have made it to the pros and heard others opine the same, over the years. He had a pretty good arm on him, with accuracy, that could make all the throws, and was a good leader. Always felt we had a chance with him at QB, if our defense kept us in the game. That was back when the QB's usually called their own plays in the huddle, too. Haven't a clue as to star rating. To this day, I feel he was one of the best QB's to ever play here.

Way back when, one of the top college All Star games was the Blue - Gray.
The year he was a Senior, he won the Offensive MVP for the game and another Gamecock, Rusty Ganas, a 6' 9" (height is not a typo) DE won the Defensive MVP. Pretty good night for Carolina.

I think Todd Ellis would have been our only 5 star. There were John Elway comparisons of him. I don't remember all those other schools recruiting Taneyhill. I recall him more as a coming out of nowhere guy.

He was also drafted by the Mets out of High School , and recruited by Lefty Drissell to play basketball at Davidson when Davidson was balling. So, no. He didn't just show up and ask for a shot. He was a highly recruited in-state athlete. But my guess he would have been a 3 star on the national scale. Had there been internet boards during 1965 you're looking at a guy that locals would have been going nuts over.
You may not remember or know but Jeff Grantz was as good a baseball player as he was a football player and a lot of schools wanted him. I would have to say at least a Fo Star. - Jeff would have been a duel-threat guy as he was more of a runner. Probably a 3/4 star guy.
Ellis came from a big high school and set the world on fire during his time there. Everyone wanted him. Five Star. - Ellis was a BIG Time recruit. I think you are right. a 5 star drop back.
Tanneyhill also came from a big high school in Pa. Everyone wanted him including Bama, psu, osu ect ect. Five Star. - Taneyhill is a bit of an urban legend. My guess is he would have been a 4 star. Yes we all thought he was a big get, but he wasn't as big nationally as we make him out to be.
Phil Petty, I could be wrong on this one but Phil really wasnt that highly recruited. I dont remember a lot of fanfare around his arrival to Columbia. Tree Star at best. - Phil came along during the time of recruiting rankings. I think he was a 3 star, and that may have been slightly inflated. Phil had a noodle arm and was not quick.
This is a fun topic BTW.

Yes, agree with your red comments.
Based upon what I've seen over the years, I think it'd go something like this:
5*: Todd Ellis, Freddy Solomon (see if anyone notices :) )
4*: Anthony Wright, Steve Tanneyhill, Dondrial Pinkins
3*: Allen Mitchell, Mike Hold, Cory Jenkins
2*/3*: Garry Harper, Sunshine Bass, Bobby Fuller, Jeff Grantz, Tommy Suggs
2*: Phil Petty

That sounds right. About the only way you could tell back then was by the other schools offering a schollie. I think everybody wanted Ellis and Taneyhill.

There was a story about Morrison's recruitment of Todd. Not sure if true, but allegedly, they brought him out of the tunnel at WB with 2001 blaring in the background, and said something like, "son, this is what it will be like every home game in the fall with 80,000 fans screaming."

Fulton actually simulated a game winning drive over Nebraska and they played it when Ellis came into the stadium.
