Future Gamecock Golfer in PGA Tournament

Matt Nesmith, a rising freshman member of our golf team, will be playing in the Wyndham Championship this week.

I have to admit I genuinely don't understand the way golf works at the collegiate level. Why does the NCAA allow an upcoming freshman to participate in a pro tournament and then enroll in school as an amateur? They wouldn't allow athletes from other sports to compete professionally and maintain eligibility.

If anyone can explain how this works, I would love to learn about it.

If you don't take money in the form of a prize, you are still an amateur...college Players don't take mOney when they play in tour events

You compete as an amateur and don't receive prize money.

Thanks for clearing that up for me guys. That's kinda what I figured. That's great for these players' experience. But, it I would imagine it might be a bit of a bummer if one of these guys played their butt off and won a big tournament with a large payday. If that happened, would they have the option of taking the money and not returning to NCAA play?

That's probably a bit far-fetched, but an interesting scenario IMO.

I don't think so. I think when you enter as an amateur you enter under different terms and are not in contention for the money. If you win anything it is somehow redistributed amongst the rest of the field.

Yea, He is from North Augusta. I grew up playing golf with his cousin. He has been playing great lately. I think he won 2 or 3 in row these past couple of months. He is currently ranked #19 amateur in the world.

It was awesome to be out there watching him both days. He had a pretty decent crowd of family and friends following him. We got rowdy Thursday when he strung together 3 birdies over 4 holes to close out his front nine. The grandstand on 18 erupted when the third one dropped. He played really well considering the circumstances and damn near made the cut. He birdied 15 and 17 on Friday to get it back to even par but missed the green on 18 and made a bogey.
