I think the defense really has a chance.

We still have these guys on the roster:

Moore
Sawyer
Diggs
Blackshear
Thomas
Smith
Whitlow
Wideman

All are talented enough to be on the 2 deep.

Then we have these guys coming in this Summer that could contribute:

King
Jackson (hopefully)
Taylor
Whitfield
Thompson

This defense has a chance to be very good, very quick. But I think the #1 priority is shoring up that secondary!

we will be fine at QB even if it's Orth. The bigger question to me is the rest of the O. We could have Cam Newton stand in as QB, but with WRs that are undersized, can't get open or catch, no running game and little pass protection even he would look bad. That was reality last season. It seemed all other teams had to do was put double coverage on Cooper and we were done. No QB can poop out an open SEC caliber WR somewhere on the field.

No offense, but didn't we say this last year too??

All I'm saying is, I'm hopefully optimistic, but once bitten, twice shy.

Different team. Different scheme. Different coaching staff.

Bad apples have been removed for the most part it seems. Physically, the team is much improved and will continue to improve over the Summer. The returning players for the most part have SEC experience and are a year older.

What we had last year has no bearing on this year's group.

Also, our defensive 2 deep (as shown) is chalked full of upperclassmen. Add in the players listed above that are currently on the team but not shown, and it will pay dividends.

There is A LOT more to work with that I originally thought. But again, we have to shore up the secondary and HOPEFULLY King and Jackson go a long way in doing that.

Agree with your sentiments...Really hoping the JC Jackson deal works out for him and us...Shocked Fenton didn't beat out Rico..I hope that means Rico hda a great spring....Fenton has superstar talent...But maybe the different coaching philosophy is aiding more players to reach their potential and become better players...That appears to be the case at all three levels of our defense...

On offense i want Helms at center and Stanley at RG with Knott on the bench...

Forgive me if I am late on this, but I thought Skai Moore was coming back?

EDIT: Nevermind, see his name on the injured list.

One thing I really notice is that we have a lot of experience and upperclassmen on defense in the starting line up, and Skai Moore is still missing from it. I know the defense has not been good the last 2 years, and maybe the guys we recruited on D that are here now aren't up to par with SEC caliber defensive players, but I really hope to see more of an improvement from last year as we did the year before, and hope that the defense can be the reason we win a few games this year with all of the experience and maturity we have. I don't think we really saw a game where the defense was the reason we've won in the past 2 years.... We certainly haven't seen a defense that could slow down or stop a decent offense in the past 2 years, the only teams the defense had any success with were teams with known not good offenses.

Yes. Otherwise it will be interesting to see how Lammons handles covering both CB and safety at the same time.....

Also I guess once Skai returns he'll be added to the 2-deep along with Allen-Williams at SLB? Can't imagine Bryson being there alone - they should be able to stick someone there behind him with all the LB depth we currently have...

This is my expectation. I thought the chatter was that for Skai to make it in the bigs, he would need to be a safety. I have wondered if part of his deal to come back was Boom telling him that he would play him at safety to get a year of experience and exposure before the 2017 Combine.

For those talking about the lack or Skai in the list. He is currently injured and will be evaluated during the summer and fall practices. The same goes for a couple other players.

I suspect that this depth chart will be completely different, on defense, come fall. Those that are 1's could be backups, unless they are calling everyone that switches in and out the #1s.

Defense is going to be nice if these corners come in.

The format of the defensive depth chart leaves a lot open for interpretation.

Primary defense is going to be 3 lineman and the BUCK, right?

-- So, on the depth chart, the second 'DE' (Fennell & English) would be a more situational type pass-pushing specialist..

-- SLB = SAM Linebacker = BUCK

Here's my best case scenario base formation:

DE - (8) M. Lewis; (18) K.Thomas
DT - (94) K. Griffin; (93) U. Jones
DT - (95) D. Sawyer; (90) T. Stallworth

BUCK - (4) B. Allen-Williams; (28) J. Walton
MLB - (28) J. Walton; (11) T.J. Holloman; (4) B. Allen-Williams
WLB - (10) S. Moore; (11) T.J. Holloman; (23) L. Bryant

CB - (#) J. King; (1) R. McWilliams
S - (3) C. Lammons; (17) C. Elder; (6) C. Moody
S - (42) J. Diggs; (24) D.J. Smith
CB - (#) J.C. Jackson; (3) C. Lammons
N - (1) R. McWilliams; (16) R. Fenton

If i am not mistaken, Sawyer has been moved back to DE...Donte will take thet DE spot were Fennell is currently listed as the starter...Plus if English gets healthy, he'll be 2nd at the position....Unless of course one of the freshmen boots him lower

Also have to account for Blackshear. He should be 100% in the Fall and has big time upside if he allows Muschamp & Thompson to mold him.

Our front 4 is going to be very strong, IMO.

How do you leave Whitlow off that list, he played in 9 games last year starting 3 and only 2 players had more TFL despite his limited playing time and then his performance in the spring game...

I read something a couple of weeks ago about him not performing as expected.....but I'm not sure that was over the entire spring or just 1 practice.
Either way, I'm sure a message has been sent.

I am very happy about our 2 deep on the defensive front 7 when all the injured players return. Muschamp said those DL guys can't play more than 8 plays in a row.....more likely less.

Coaching and effort will matter this year....

I think our defense should finally be pretty solid. So much experience and enough talent back there. Offense will likely be in trainwreck mode for at least the first few games but hopefully good enough to pick up some wins.
