Default Does the basketball run...help the football team?

Interesting question a group of us asked. Does this wonderful basketball run help the football team? ( hope its right forum).

I say yes. Why? Branding. Thats the name of the game these days. And honestly outside of our state, U of SC doesnt carry much brand name weight. We need positive name recognition. Now...does that mean Alabama basketball should benefit from their football success? Maybe. But their BRAND has long been established as a football school.

But ours? We arent "branded" necessarily in anything, good or bad. Duke football was branded as awful. Kansas football also. So their basketball success hasn't helped.

But we are neither. So anything that associates the Gamecocks with WINNING big...only helps. If we are pursuing some big football recruits...it only helps to see our hoops team in the Elite 8 tomorrow. But we arent branded as a "basketball school" like Kentucky, Kansas or UCLA. Combined with baseball....we hopefully will be seen just as an athletic dept that wins and wins often.

Its fun though i know that!

Default Re: Does the basketball run...help the football team?

We have a brand, and we have had some national exposure over the past few decades
but face it..... If you're a major corporation and want to get your name out there, you
advertise, Advertise more, and then ADVERTISE AGAIN. In college sports, the way you
advertise is to win, and WIN CONSISTENTLY ! We advertised big in 2010 when we won
the SEC Eastern Conf. Title, and won a national Championship in Baseball. After that
second run for a National Championship in baseball in 2011, we dropped off the map and
are trying to get back to the national stage. After winning that one Eastern Conf. title, we
have not made a serious run at another yet, and have even sunk backwards from it. Up
until the post season in Basketball NOW, we have not "advertised" our product on the
court real well. In fact, when you say the phrase "Gamecock Basketball" prior to last
weekend to anyone outside our own fanbase, it was usually met with negative remarks
as soon as they stopped laughing. ...... simply put "WE DON'T ADVERTISE WELL AT THIS
SCHOOL"
Alabama, LSU, UNC, Kentucky, Arizona etc..... Those schools have consistent winning
programs in at least one (some have more than one) Major Sport in the College ranks,
and have over the years advertised extremely well. They aren't name brand commodities
over night, or even in this one past decade.

Until SC finds a Major Sport in their school that can start winning big, AND ...win
consistently, it doesn't matter what Logo, catch phrase, or high profile coach we land
here. If it doesn't relate to winning over a couple of decades on a consistent basis,
we're always going to be a Cinderella team if we make it to the post season in any
sport, and we'll be an afterthought on the national level if after that one nice run THIS
YEAR, we become dormant again for the next 8-10 years or more before our team
Pops up in the post season again.

Not only WIN, but Win Consistently .............. That's the only way you get that recognized Brand.

Success breeds success. Whether it is that of another Gamecock team, academics, the weather, anything really, anything positive helps everything about the university.

Yes winning cures all but promoting brand awareness, regardless of the win-loss column, can only help. That being said this win will absolutely help raise the image of our athletic dept. Though even before these tourney wins, Champ has already been quietly building our own blue collar football brand. Give the man time and our football brand will be as strong as our basketball brand is now.

Certainly, one program feeds off another. You don't think Bentley, Samuels and Dowdel aren't watching and saying, 'damn we could do that' ?

I think they will be motivated to not be overshadowed. Remember, basketball season overlaps football a bit. I could see all the talk going to the basketball team next season if we are struggling in football. It's kind of like most people have forgotten all about baseball right now. Usually this time of year we are knee deep in baseball. Plus Frank has shown how you can build something special from nothing in Columbia. It has to give the football program a bit more motivation. Frank wasn't a big name when he came here, he just worked his ass off and built something special. I think most people chalk our success under Spurrier to his legendary status. It doesn't take a "name" to win in Columbia, just hard work and determination. I think Boom already has us on the Frank Martin plan. They seem like similar coaches.

Of course it helps Muschamp and Frank can use some of the same players lol. One doing really well increases the recruiting of the whole school and not just student athletes in will bring in more students from all over that will think it fun to come be apart of us. As generations go on they will never know the very spacious trophy cases that we were attacked for by our rivals.

Gamecock baseball, Clemson football, men's and ladies basketball. Football with 33 wins in 3 and Clooney #1 overall and Gilmore a top 10 pick and lockdown corner, and all the other guys starting in the NFL. It's surprising the state is slept on when there's good sports teams in SC.

But Bama is all about football. I personally think the 2010 Baseball NC helped the football team with the basic "If they can win so can we". Basketball success won't hurt, but today's expectations in baseball and football wouldn't be less even if the basketball team was average.

This is really resulting in positive press for the University, I was watching a replay of Fox New's interview with MOH recipient Kyle Carpenter this morning, and they brought up that he was a student at Carolina and that he was in NY for the interview, but was able to make it to watch the game, and Kyle snuck in a "Go Cocks". Not sure it will directly impact the football program, but positive press can never hurt.

Hell yes, the basketball success will get more fans into the tent and once you're in, you don't just pull for the basketball team, you pull for all our teams.

I think back to when I came into this tent, back when I was a young fellow growing up in SC. McGuire's boys (Frank the first) were amazing to watch and the whole state went nuts over them. The Gamecocks became my team and I've bled garnet ever since.

I believe the basketball team's success will help all our sports teams indirectly by our ability to raise more money and improve our facilities. Plus these young athletes want to go to a school that is successful. And winning will do that for us, especially getting all the positive media exposure we are now getting.
