Default 2018/2019 opponents Coastal and Charleston Southern

Its slow season so ill try to fill some space. 2 new opponents:

FBS Coastal: played the FCS version but now they're FBS so they're "new". Could Coastal, as SCs now 3rd FBS team, ever become a legit threat to USC (or CU)? They're obviously way behind in facilities. But they offer a unique recruiting benefit being at the beach. And they actually can boast quite a few NFL stars (Mike Tolbert, Josh Norman, Jerome Simpson, a few others) to lure some recruits. Its my alma mater, played 4 yrs there, and they arent shy about saying their goal is to close that gap.

Charleston Southern: Scrappy team from Charleston. They are the only FCS team in SC which USC and Clemson have never played. USC plays them 2019. Should be a fairly easy win. But...they've beat The Citadel 5x in a row and beat them twice in 2015 (1 was playoffs) when as we know Citadel was quite good. AND in 2014 they went into Vanderbilt and lost 21-20...had game winning score brought back by a SIDELINE INTERFERENCE flag (seriously). Also gave Kentucky fits for 3 quarters before UK pulled away. Sooo...they've shown they can compete with the lower end SEC talent so hope USC gets ahead early and puts them away.

***Keep an eye on their OC Gabe Gardina. He was the guy I said should have been considered for our OL coach. Hes a former Bama player and he coached under Saban at Bama. Has worked wonders with the CSU running game.

Should be 2 fun out of conference games.

Charleston Southern also has lost a lot of its staff since last season. The HC left to go to Coastal to be an assitant (maybe OC don't remember) their DC went to Furman along with former Gamecock Rob Wilson (who has since left Furman for a job in the NFL) and another defensive assistant.

Yep their HC went to Coastal as OC and unofficial head coach in waiting once Maglia retires. Their D staff was outstanding and went to Furman.

However...their new HC is Mark Tucker. He was QB coach for them last 5 yrs. Hes known as a defensive genius vs stopping the run, the option in particular, which is odd since hes a QB coach. But for 10 years he made a living as a consultant to any team about to play Ga Tech, Navy or anyone else facing the triple option. Heard hes a brilliant recruiter and was behind a lot of the recent success at CSU recruiting. That defensive staff was there before him but when he arrived in 2013 thats when they really took off, beat App State, Citadel, etc in year 1. Nearly beat Vanderbilt too. Held Citadel and Wofford to far fewer yards than even USC, Ole Miss, Clemson, etc did.

Its nice to see. I for one am a huge fan of the IN STATE games vs FCS teams. 95% of the time its a nice low stress win, gives USC backups a chance at some reps, and gives fans and players at our in state FCS programs a day on the biggest stage.

Overall its good for recruiting also because it further ties USC to IN STATE football. Some of those stars at Byrnes, Gaffney, Summerville, etc dont get SEC/ACC offers and end up at Furman or CSU. So their high school coaches love seeing those guys still getting a shot to play in WB Stadium. Its a drop in the bucket of good-will with in state HS coaches. But every drop counts!!!

Plus....these FCS coaches recruit the same high schools USC does. Treat them well on gameday, they talk to HS coaches and the reputation of USCs staff gets another drop in the bucket of good will.

IN STATE IN STATE IN STATE!!!!!

Coastal game will be season opener. It will be nice to play a beatable team at home to open the season for once.

Yes...by "beatable" i know you mean very likely, since we have quite a great opening day record the last 10 years (lost to A&M in 2014 but the rest...all wins i believe?)

Plus Coastal is FBS so it always will count towards bowl eligibility.

Will it actually be a home game to open the season? The only down side I see is that type of match up generally leads to a Noon spot, which at that time of year will be horribly hot.

Yeah. I don't wanna say it's an easy opponent, but lately we seem to have tougher opening games (either SEC or solid OOC teams i.e UNC, NCSU) when compared to Coastal.

carolina_corpsman - the press release said it will open the season. And it's still possible it could get sent to 7:30 on the SEC Network

From 2005 to 2016, all season openers have been wins except 2014.
Another bonus of playing Coastal: keeps the money in-state.

I see them in the Sun Belt being very similar to App State or Georgia Southern. They'll be a tough scrappy group capable of the upset...but unlikely.

Unless recent rules have changed, 1 FCS school still goes towards your 6 wins for bowl eligibility.

Yes but we can play Coastal PLUS an FCS team and both will count (assuming we win both)

I despise this type of asininity. We have absolutely everything to lose and nothing to gain. This hurts our brand and that of the SEC as well. We are far better served both in recruiting and in strength of schedule by replacing these type of teams with mid majors from areas that we would like to expand our recruiting footprint into.

They lost a lot of their staff because of possible pending NCAA violations at CSU. They jumped ship.

Hes definitely not the only one, but yeah, might also feel good knowing your offense is such a headache that professional consultants exist just as contract workers to help for 1 week! Tennessee opens 2017 w Ga Tech. Bet they've hired a consultant for all of August! Lose that game and Jones may be gone.

I disagree. Would playing a mid major, with more chance of losing, be better? Losing to an FCS is rare for SEC/ACC Power 5 schools. And its STILL amateur college kids. There are dozens of kids who are career backups or even scout teamers who help the program daily in prepping to starters for SEC play.

So....the week before Clemson....if the starters build up a 31-7 2nd half lead over Charleston Southern or Chattanooga or whoever....then for 1 day those kids parents and girlfriends get to see them hit the field and play. All the hard days of scout team work and helping out in any way the coaches ask...rewarded by 1 measly quarter of actual on field action in late mop up time over an FCS team. Proud dads, who are paying their tuition, get to see their son run down a kickoff in Williams Brice. And that kid...and his family...join the Gamecock Club and become donors.

These games are the carrot to show walk ons and career 3rd stringers. To keep them showing up and working hard. Because playing in a game is possible.

Just saying...its a good thing.

OR....we could go schedule Boise State or Houston or Northern Illinois to fill that week between Florida and Clemson. How would that work out?

I have been around long enough to see us lose to these type teams. Furman anyone? Citadel? Etc? A loss to one of these hurts far more than a loss to a better team. As far as other school's athletes go I don't care if ISIS bombs their team bus. I only care about USC's teams.

Dude, if we're going to lose to Furman or Citadel, we're going to lose to whoever we play that week. And losing to Furman or Wake Forest doesn't make that big of difference in bowl committee perception.

You take the easy road every time unless the rules change. We play one power 5 out of conference EVERY year, and right now they're pretty good, and then fill in the second spot with a mid tier power 5 team. However, those aren't easy, either. We need to have a FCS and a smaller state school to pad the record. Until the SEC or bowl committees start actually penalizing the SEC for this, we should follow the trend.

As far as the OP, Coastal moving up will hurt Charleston Southern and other D 2 schools. We now have three div 1 teams, the talent that used to trickle down and be distributed by location or coaching staff or whatever now has another D 1 school to contend with.
