A 5yr Show Cause is NOT A 5YR BAN. In simple, layman's terms, the NCAA gave him a 5 game ban and a postseason appearance ban (both for the first year only). Now, that penalty would have applied to him effective immediately, if he had stayed at OSU. He resigned, so a SHOW CAUSE simply means that, within a 5yr period, if a team wants to hire Tressel, they would have to accept those penalties HE incurred, and apply them to him.

If the team did not want to apply the penalties, then they would schedule an appearance before the infractions committee to SHOW a CAUSE why not. In UK's case, they could either accept the already stipulated 5 game penalty or they could schedule the show cause and ask to have the penalty reduced/waived. UK could very well do that, since Tressel voluntarily paid the penalty, last year, by sitting out 6 games after being hired by the Colts as an assistant. He was not required to do that, because the NCAA has no jurisdiction/authority outside of College athletics.

It's very likely that the NCAA would grant a reduction/waiver in some form. All UK has to do, really, is just monitor Tressel's communications (e-mails) within the AD, and send a report twice a year. They report progress to the NCAA regularly anyway, so it's really just a formality.
