He sounds like a great kid. Little bit of a speech problem like Damiere, but a great kid nonetheless. I love how we are getting all of these high character recruits.

I think once we get a few more commitments other top players will want to jump on board. BAW is definitely a huge asset.

One thing that struck me about the video is the perception of mediocrity that we fight with every single recruit. I think I see a lot of people on this board saying that because of this and because of that people should be banging down our door. It takes a long time to overcome perception, because for a person perception is reality until its proven wrong. It especially takes a long time when you have people fighting to keep that perception in place. Guys like this make logical, fact based arguments that show guys the truth, we have accomplished a lot lately and have an infrastructure ready that can move forward. It should go to show you just what our coaches have to do to convince a person to play here. It's not an easy job, but I think they do a good job of it.
In today's world of sports the only thing that counts in championships, and we need to win the SEC. Winning that, I believe, would solidify us in SC, NC, and allow us to poach a few from GA and Fla every year. That will be a great base of talent.

LOL not sure if serious.. we already are solidified in SC/NC (Mitch/Bryant came from NC last year, we almost always get the top guys in SC every year), and already are poaching other states (NJ, GA, PA, Fla, etc).. I truly hope we can do MUCH better than that if we win the SEC, you described where we currently are.

Let me sum up the part of his interview where he was talking about Barker...
"We're still cool. I'm gonna sack the $#!+ outta him when we play, but we cool..."

Love how this always gets said when it isn't true. What people don't like to hear (the reasonable ones) is the expectation that SC should have already won a championship. Sure it would have been nice and SC has had chances, but by no means is it an indictment on the coaching staff that one hasn't already been won.
What we don't like is the idiots that think we should be even or BETTER than Alabama, etc and don't realize just how much work that takes. Do you realize just how bad SC SUCKED as a program when Spurrier first arrived? Do you remember 63-17 against a Clemson team that was nowhere near the team they have today? Do you not remember losing every game for two straight seasons?? South Carolina had a PATHETIC football program before Spurrier. I remember very well when we used to get beat by Kentucky and Vanderbilt each year. We were literally the doormat of the SEC. I have used this analogy before, but I still think it is applicable. Lets say you came in and took over some sorry ass computer company that was barely able to keep its door open and you wanted to turn it around. Would you expect to surpass Apple in sales in 8 years? If so, I can promise you that you wouldn't make it. So lets say after 8 years, Apple at least knew who the hell you were and you were getting closer and closer each year. Only an idiot would call that a failure. Well in college football, The SEC is the top of the chain. Sure, if we were in the ACC, I would say that we should have already won a championship. But we aren't in the ACC or any other conference for that matter. We are in the SEC. Overnight successes (yes even 8 years) are usually things that happened over decades, not individual years. Look up all of the great "overnight success" stories and see how long it really took. I just think some fans are completely unrealistic in just how difficult the task is of turning SC into a program that can compete for and win SEC Championships. I don't think many realize just how difficult that is. I also think most of our fans have selective memories and don't realize just how bad SC was before Spurrier. |

If I hear that "we sucked so bad" before Spurrier argument again I'm going to gag.
We didn't suck. We were mediocre, but we didn't suck. We've always been above the UK's and Vandy's of the SEC, around Miss State's level. We've now managed to move above Tennessee and equal to Georgia and Florida over the last three years. People need to quit acting like we never won any games before Spurrier showed up.

I am thinking either Chubb or Carter for the surprise visitor.

IMO, Carter makes the most sense because he's from Georgia, Green or Williams wouldn't be a surprise, Scott is supposed to be here this weekend anyways (I think), and Chubb is next weekend. I could be way off in that line of thinking, but we'll see.

Now to Lou and his years. As the poster above stated, our record does indicate that we were "mediocre" during his years. But anyone who really watched that program knows that it wasn't sustainable. Remember, under Lou we were a team made up of Derek Watson's, Demetrius Summers, and a bunch of arrests waiting to happen. I respect Lou for what he did at SC, but what he was doing was not sustainable. It would have collapsed just like what has happened at Auburn. Just look at Lou's last two seasons and tell me that we weren't going in the wrong direction by that time. So I still consider that time overall to have been pretty "sucky" because it wasn't the type of environment that you actually build a program on. Do you not remember Spurrier kicking about half of the players off the team when he first arrived? Sorry, but our program was pretty pathetic before Spurrier arrived. And yes, I have been watching this team since 1980. We couldn't even get to .500 all time before Spurrier. That is not mediocre to me. That is a laughing stock. But back to your point about being "mediocre" and along the lines of Mississippi State. Tell you what.... When Miss State, Ole Miss, Arkansas, or any of the "mediocre" teams win the SEC then fans can come tell me that I should "expect more" and that Spurrier isn't getting it done. But last time I checked, Miss State hasn't had a coach that has lead them to a SEC Championship. So where are these mediocre teams that are winning SEC Championships?? Please remember that my comments started because of someone posting some comment inferring that some fans are "sunshine pumpers" and are happy with not winning championships. So all of my posts are based on the innacurracy of that comment. Some of us are just smart enough to realize that it is much more of a uphill climb than many think. So again, when Miss State wins that SEC before Spurrier, then come tell me that Spurrier isn't getting it done fast enough. Last edited by cofcgamecock9; 05-17-2013 at 07:40 PM. |

Sorry, but Dietzel, Carlen, and Morrison all had varying degrees of success at USC, and Woods had a few moments here and there.
I'm not saying our program was a powerhouse, but we weren't Idaho State either. Either way this isn't the forum for that, so we'll just agree to disagree on that.

I am not saying that you will not be able to come up with some, but I bet it will be hard to come up with many. To me, a "mediocre" program would be one that is in the middle. I bet South Carolina is nowhere near the middle when it comes to historical success. You mentioned Mississippi State as being comparable. Miss State won bowl games in 1911, 1940, 1963, 1974, 1981 all before SC won its very first bowl game. You mentioned Kentucky... Kentucky has two SEC Championships and a National Championship in its history. Kentucky had 26 All-Americans in its history prior to 2005 (Spurrier's first year). More than SC prior to Spurrier's arrival. Kentucky won five bowl games before SC won its first. |
