First off, we had Shaw, Lattimore Wilds and Jeffery to start....and on Elliotts oline we had shell, tj johnson, cann, robinson, jarriel king, chisolm, patrick etc on those teams. we had serious talent. Compare those names with 2014-2016..Not close. What ive always heard is that its the jimmies and the joes and not the xs and os..thats my take.

That is why i will never ever have one bad thing to say about Spurrier. We had a glorious run, and it was fun.
Jimmys and Joes need coaching. If you fail to develop players as a coach that you can execute in your system, you still fail as a coach, because having the players for it is your responsibility. The biggest difference. Is those better OL would whiff and lose battles up front about half the time. More recently it more like almost every play. We shouldn't be losing in the trenches to teams like the Citadel, and Central Florida.

People have always complained about the OL.

But when UGA couldn't stop Marcus in '10 with all those zone type plays...that was a thing of beauty and I'll never forget it.

No matter what offense you run. You need to have some blocking up front to be able to run the ball against good teams. Even Marcus was stoned a time or 8 at the line in his day. We play Western Carolina and we run the ball for over 400 yards 226 for Dowdle. We have the runningback. He could do that because we could block Western Carolina. We sure as heck can't block Miss State, or Florida though. We invite them into our backfield every play and the set up a permanent residence and we can't even run for 50 yards. Against the good defense that are ready for the zone stuff, it doesn't work. You need blocking to run the football in those kinds of games.

Mississippi State was more about injuries than anything else - Knott and Helms were not close to 100%, Stanley got hurt the previous game causing shuffling to get Camper into the starting line-up, and Camper promptly got hurt against MSU. When you have a patchwork O Line and a change of pace back as your primary ball carrier, with no passing attack (Deebo pulled up lame on the first play), your offense ain't gonna work.

Against UF, Boom went with a vanilla run game almost exclusively to take the pressure off Bentley, hoping we could win a defensive struggle. You cannot beat a D like UF, in the Swamp, with a one dimensional attack. That was not on the O Line so much as on the O coaches and Bentley's inexperience.

Bottom line is that no type of run blocking will work if you don't have a balanced attack.

Yeah all those National Championships these triple option teams are winning....

I would say that is a special case regardless. The defense has a lot to worry about in a triple option scheme, so you effectively balance the attack by sometimes going inside, sometimes pitching, sometimes QB keeper, etc. Then the 2 pass plays that will gash you for 60 yards that you have to worry about.

The triple option is a novelty offense that works because teams very seldom see it. Even then, good defenses shut the triple option down and force passes, which usually don't work too well. Clemson has absolutely killed G Tech the last few years.

Ace and I agree on this. If you have a good D that can play assignment football; they can usually shut down the triple option. Clemson occasionally scheduled Wofford or some other small triple teams as a tune up for GT (many times in the past GT was a thorn in Clemson's side). But if a team rarely sees one, it can be trouble. In 2013 UF (already decimated with injuries) lost to Georgia Southern, who completed no passes (0-3) but ran for over 400 yards.

I was just making a point to the another poster. There are thousands of excuses for not being good at something, but at the end of the day, you're still not good at something.

It's not vanilla play calling, It a defense in man coverage still being able to lock down our receivers and then loading up the box against us, and no one being able to block up front for draws and screens, which is what you need to do to keep a defense honest. Its not anything different we did against other teams, it's we can't get blocking up front so we can get a run play that goes beyond the line of scrimmage enough times. In those kinds of games you need to be able grind out enough tough short runs. And its impossible if we have defenders meeting us in the back field 60% of the time and right at the LOS 90% of the time they don't. This is the SEC. You have to be SEC caliber along the trenches to have success even if you plan to scheme around it as a weakness. And we have not be SEC caliber lately in the trenches. Because there will be time scheming around a weak OL will not work, and having run plays were we are actually getting the right seals, and giving as good as we get up front is going to make a difference in a game and the season.
