Default The most underrated player on each Top 25 team

http://www.espn.com/college-sports/s...er-top-25-team

25. South Carolina: WR Bryan Edwards

A lot of people are going to be excited about the return of Deebo Samuel to the Gamecocks' receiver corps, and they should be. But don't sleep on Bryan Edwards. He's caught 103 passes and eight touchdowns the past two seasons, after all. -- Scarborough

Not even on the radar screen: Bruce's 1st season on the FB team was in 2011, which was Alshon's last season. Bruce only had 211 receiving yds that season. Bruce and Ace were a bigger receiving duo than Bruce and Alshon, and Ace and Alshon were also a bigger duo together (Ace's first season was in 2010).

Still, Ace only had 1,230 total career receiving yds as a Gamecock, so his tandem with either Alshon or Bruce still pales next to what Deebo and Bryan have done together thus far, and that's saying something since Deebo has missed an entire season's worth of games during their time together.

Both Deebo and Bryan have received as much as 783 yds in a season, proving both are capable of being leading "go-to" receivers. Deebo got his in only a 10-game season in 2016, and had he played all 13 gms that season, his per-game average would have had him a 1,000 yd receiver. He maintained that average through the 3 games in 2017 he played before falling to injury once again. If Deebo can have an injury-free season, he's shown that he's capable of being an explosive offensive force for the Gamecocks: he tied for the lead in rushing TDs with 6 in 2016, and has multiple special teams' touchdown returns.

The one thing that's been missing for Deebo is the ability to rack up receiving TDs in the end zone, with only 5 career TDs thus far, but he had 3 of them through 3 games last season before the injury, so he's certainly capable of scoring big there.

Edwards hasn't shown the offensive versatility that Deebo has, but he's shown that he's able to score more TDs through the air in only 2 seasons. Both Samuel and Edwards have over 1,000 career receiving yards together as a tandem, something not seen at USC since Sidney Rice and Kenny McKinley. Again remember that Deebo has missed 13 of the 26 games they could've played together. Edwards has now surpassed Samuels in career receiving yds and career receiving TDs in only 2 years of play compared to 3 for Deebo. Hopefully both have a full final year of football together, as they will be a huge defensive problem for opposing SEC teams, and we're not even talking about what OrTre and Shi will present to the field....

Deebo Samuel:
18 gms, 86 receptions, 1,194 yds (66.3 YPG), 5 tds

Bryan Edwards:
25 gms, 108 receptions, 1,383 yds (55.3 YPG), 9 tds

This was an interesting question, so I hit the stats. The three best seasons by a pair of WRs in the most recent era (since the late '90s; I didn't look up the numbers of Sterling/Ira Hillary/Eric Poole, but I bet they are close), in descending order, are the following:

3. Pharaoh Cooper and Nick Jones, 2014, 111 catches, 1650 yards, 14 TDs

2. Sidney Rice and Kenny McKinley, 2006, 123 catches, 1900 yards, 15 TDs

1. Alshon Jeffrey and Tori Gurley, 2010, 132 catches, 1980 yards, 13 TDs

Damn, we've had some good receivers!

And just as an FYI, two best seasons by a single receiver in that same time span:

2. Sidney Rice, 2005, 70 catches, 1143 yards, 13 TDs

1. Alshon Jeffrey, 2010, 88 catches, 1517 yards, 9 TDs

Stats aside bc deebo has obviously missed a bunch of time, how do you think this duo matches up vs the others previously mentioned just from a talent perspective?

I think Bryan and Deebo, healthy all year, with Jake throwing to them in the up-tempo attack, could be the best, statistically, of all time.

Sterling's best year was '86, when he caught 74 balls for 1100 yards and 10 TDs (he ran for two more). That year Raynard Brown and Ryan Bethea were the #2 and #3 targets, but neither caught more than 30. His senior year, arguably the most prolific of the Run N Shoot era, he caught 64, Bethea had 45, Kevin White had 42, Danny Smith had 34 and Harold Green had 29 ... no wonder Todd Ellis had so many records!

I am looking forward to seeing Deebo and Bryan play an entire season together and stay healthy. I think with Deebo available we would have won at least one more game last season. In 3 games last season he had 250 yards receiving. Extrapolating that would make him a 1000 yard receiver. That doesn't include his kick off returns.

Exactly. Half or more of this team is made up of guys just waiting to be seen. “The ceiling is the roof” for most of the secondary. Montac, Williams, Nixon, Dickerson, and Mukuama. Then you got Aaron sterling, Randrecous Davis, and a handful more plus the names you mentioned. A lot to be seen.

Two players I am rooting for to make a name for themselves are BAW and Blackshear. BAW has been totally dedicated, moved around to help the team, and been a vocal leader. Blackshear has been snakebit, and the coaches feel good about how he's worked to turn things around.

Being a "Little Older", I always think about Sterling Sharpe and Ryan Bethea when anyone mentions WR tandems.

Todd Ellis definitely had a talented group to throw to.
