Default Ranking college football's programs on the verge

Link:
https://247sports.com/ContentGallery...2/#119398782_1

8) South Carolina

Here's a program not like the others in this list, one with a 122-year
football history defined by mediocrity and a rabid fanbase despite
limited success. The Gamecocks have never won an SEC Championship and
the closest they've gotten to playing for a national title was a No. 4
ranking in the final poll in 2013, the program's third consecutive Top
10 finish under Steve Spurrier. Eight of the Gamecocks' nine all-time
bowl wins have come since the turn of the century as well as six of nine
Top 25 finishes. South Carolina began building its brand during the Lou
Holtz era and saw its most exposure under Spurrier with a number of
high-end NFL Draft picks and talent. Can Will Muschamp keep it going? He
has already improved South Carolina's win total from three to six to
nine in two seasons and will benefit from a significant facilities
upgrade later this season. If the Gamecocks can become a Top 15 mainstay
in recruiting under his watch, South Carolina could be in the national
conversation very soon. And the program is off to a great start in 2019 on the trail.

The article makes it sound like Muschamp was handed a turn key SEC Champship caliber team by Spurrier. Spurrier left Muschamp a dumpster fire.

Other then that it’s a good article

Yeah but if we're looking for positives and trying to build a national brand, let's leave that part out for now. The coaching name drops were meant to highlight our potential as a top program according to some legendary coaches. Muschamp will get his proper recognition in due time. The fanbase loves him.

I thought the closest we got to playing for a national title was in 1984, second to last game of the regular season when we were #2 and upset by Navy, the same week #1 Nebraska lost to Oklahoma.

I agree with the 1984 team - we had a lot stacked up and then lost to Navy. Not many people remember that as it was a while back. What the author is pointing out is that the 3 years we were in the top 10 was a pinnacle of Gamecock Football History. In Gamecock history, even though we had made it into the top 10 at times, we never had a legitimately top 10 program - the kind that could expect (not just "hope") to beat teams like Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Clemson consistently. I know that Spurrier has taken a lot of flack about leaving in the middle of a year, however he was the coach that put our program on the map nationally and proved that USC can be a top 10 program. Personally as a 50+ year Gamecock fan, I am very thankful that Spurrier was our coach! Her is to pulling for Muschamp to get us back to a top 10 program, and even greater (a SEC Championship would be great). I love how Muschamp is approaching recruiting and building HIS brand of a Gamecock program. Go Cocks!!!!

Everyone thinks Mullen is a slam dunk success at FLA, I don’t. When he was at FLA as the OC he was considered by Florida folks as arrogant and rubbed other staff, boosters and Admiistration the wrong way. He took the “I’m smarter than you” approach to a new level. He simply wasn’t likable. He has done well at MST because expectations were low and he never had many big wins.

He is not a great recruiter and is entering a Florida program with really great recruiters in Taggert and Richt in the same state. When expectations don’t pan out we will see another meltdown in FLA.

This is correct, 84 team was the closest to playing in the National Championship game. We were a Navy win away, then went up there and got stomped. Returned and went and won in Clemson the following week(late fourth quarter FG I believe) and earned a Gator Bowl bid instead of a Title bid, Navy loss was the difference.

I'm not so sure we would have beaten Clemson had we beaten Navy.

Interesting points here, however Mullen shouldn’t have to be the greatest recruiter, because of the talent instate, which is plentiful between the 3 Power 5 teams.

Why wouldn’t we have? Clemson was 7-4 that year, which is subpar for their standards. I think we should have beat them more handily, had we not been hungover from the letdown the week prior. Had we taken care of business in Annapolis like we should have, the total focus would have been on them and we’d have won going away, just my theory.

Of the top 50 players in the state of Florida for 2019, the Gators have just 1 committed. FSU has 8, Miami has 6, Clemson has 2. Oregon and Arkansas have the same as the Gators. Gators class is currently ranked 35th. Not exactly a stellar start on the recruiting trail.

Right, but he’s just getting started. Kinda hard to sell your program after they just fired their coaches. Not defending Dan Mullen, just saying his talent will get there sooner than later, as long as he sells the program right.

Boom did not tear it up at UF, but there was no question that he was a dynamic recruiter and high energy guy. He brought in a lot of talent as evidenced by the high NFL draft picks.

McElwain was kinda the opposite - not much personality and he created a lot of apathy with the fanbase and recruits. I see Mullen as a very good coach but not so great as a recruiter, and he has the reputation of having a prickly personality.

All of which is great for the U and FSU, also for out of state schools like Clemson and us.

That may be true, but it's still surprising to see a Mullen-less MSU at #11 and Florida at #29. Long way to go, though.

I look at Holtz's exit and then Spurrier's exit. They both knew that their best days at Carolina were over. Lou inherited a horrible team where he had to use Defensive Lineman on the O-Line. Lou was handed a 1-10 team and Steve was handed a 6-5 team. They both had success with Lou having the back to back wins over Ohio State in the Bowl Games. Steve had the three straight 10 win seasons. Steve really had it rolling in 2012 but then some of the later recruiting classes didn't work out. Let's see how far Will can elevate his teams.

I mentioned once they hired him that I felt he was the convenient / easy hire, but not a homerun hire like some are claiming.

He will likely do okay, but I don't expect FLA to return to the top of the SEC with him as their head coach.

He's at an SEC school, coming from an SEC school....I don't see that as a "just getting started". He may not be the recruiter that they needed. He did more with less at MSU but that may not pan out when he is expected to recruit against FSU and Miami. Time will tell if he can beat them by out coaching them.

Interesting point. OTOH, a lot of people feel like MSU came out smelling like a rose with Morehead replacing Mullen.

Taggert at FSU is following a coach who basically quit the Seminols job and he is killing it in his first year of recruiting. Mullen doesn’t scare me as a coach or recruiter. Everyone gushed over McElwain when he was hired as well.
