Over at gamecockarchives.com I've been building a play-by-play database. I have every game back through 2004, the entire 1988 season and various other games back through 1970. This is allowing me to build stats you can't find anywhere else for those who are into numbers. (they're on every player page). I'll post a few examples in different posts. Here's a look at Stephen Garcia's 2009 season:
Attempts : 432 Completions : 239 Completion % : 55.3 Yards : 2862 Yds Per Attempt : 6.63 Touchdowns : 17 Interceptions : 10 Int % : 2.3 3rd Down Attempts : 110 3rd Down Conversion % : 36.4 NEWS Rating : 5.66 Red Zone Attempts : 57 Red Zone Completions : 22 Red Zone Com. % : 38.6 Red Zone Yds : 181 Red Zone TD : 10 Red Zone Int : 0 Red Zone 3rd Down Conv. % : 27.8 By Receiver: Player-Receptions-Throws-Com%-Yds-First Downs-TD-Success Rate A.Jeffery-46-88-52.3%-732-32-5-44.3% W.Saunders-31-60-51.7%-345-19-3-45.0% M.Brown-33-59-55.9%-491-21-3-42.4% T.Gurley-30-53-56.6%-439-19-2-45.3% J.Barnes-26-42-61.9%-287-18-0-54.8% K.Miles-23-36-63.9%-146-7-0-36.1% B.Maddox-17-25-68.0%-136-8-2-48.0% P.DiMarco-13-21-61.9%-75-4-1-42.9% DL Moore-7-14-50.0%-70-4-1-35.7% D.Lecorn-4-7-57.1%-27-1-0-28.6% J.Giles-4-5-80.0%-14-1-0-40.0% S.Flint-1-5-20.0%-10-0-0-20.0% S.Spurrier-1-2-50.0%-13-1-0-50.0% J.Cunningham-1-1-100.%-14-1-0-100.0% E.Baker-1-1-100.0%-3-0-0-0.0% B.Sherman-1-1-100.0%-48-1-0-100.0% |

One thing I would like to see get better is Red Zone passing percentage. I do like the fact that he didn't throw any picks in the Red Zone though.

I wonder how his numbers compare to other Gamecock first year starters (or QBs first 11 or so starts)?

If anyone wants to know why Jarvis didn't play much, this is 1/2 the reason:

One comparison point - success rate - based on a formula by Pete Palmer that labels a play a success if it gains 45% of the yardage necessary for a first down on 1st down, 60% on 2nd, 100% on 3rd and 4th. I modified the formula to be 40% instead of 45% on first down.
Gamecock QB passing success rate: Blake Mitchell, 2006, 60.0% Mike Hold, 1984, 56.1% (1st 9 games) Dondrial Pinkins, 2004, 53.3% Garry Harper, 1978, 52.0% Blake Mitchell, 2005, 51.1% Allen Mitchell, 1984, 51.1% (1st 9 games) Stephen Garcia, 2008, 50.8% Blake Mitchell, 2007, 50.0% Todd Ellis, 1989, 49.5% Ron Bass, 1974, 48.7 (missing 1 game) Syvelle Newton, 2006, 47.8% Dondrial Pinkins, 2003, 47.2% Chris Smelley, 2008, 47.0% Todd Ellis, 1988, 46.3% Syvelle Newton, 2004, 45.0% Chris Smelley, 2007, 44.9% Stephen Garcia, 2009, 44.3% Phil Petty, 2001, 44.0% (6 1/2 games loaded so far) Jeff Grantz, 1974, 41.8 (missing 1 game) Dickie DeMasi, 1989, 32.8% |

I would have thought Dondrail Pinkins would have been lower while Phil Petty (2001) and Stephen Garcia would have been higher. I guess my memory isn't as reliable as it used to be. |

The other day I heard SG stepped up and addressed the team and gave a pep talk. Good to hear he's letting everyone know how he's going to continue to work hard for this team to be successful.

I'm glad you posted this. I got called an idiot multiple times this year for saying Barnes was a GREAT go-to-guy on 3rd down. 54% doesn't lie.

And we have to stop having stupid penalties or dropped passes. I can't blame others for all of it, as some of it is Garcia's fault too. But with time, things like what happened at Georgia or with Florida won't happen (penalties like 5 men in the backfield, or miscommunications between Garcia and receiver).

I was always of the opinion that Bobby Fuller, who played two years for us after transferring in from App. State with Sparky Woods, was one of the steadiest, most precise and most underrated QB's we have had. I would be curious to know where he stacks up. Got any of his stats?
