Even though he's just a freshman, there's a lot expected of running back Sony Michel (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) at these events.

Of course that's the result of a career that already has seen the 5-10, 180-pounder rush for over 3,500 yards and 30 touchdowns as an 8th and 9th grader.

"People pretty much treat me like a veteran out here now," Michel joked. "I still look up to a lot of these guys though."

Even though it's very early in the process, Michel's name is one that fans will be tracking until the 2014 national signing day. For his part, Michel said he grew up a Miami fan and has verbal offers from Miami and FSU already.

"I was definitely a Miami fan growing up and I'm still keeping up with the program," Michel said. "I like Coach Golden a lot."

Auburn and Florida also interest the future star, but he is still trying to get many things accomplished at the high school level.

"I just want to get better as a player, get faster and stronger," Michel said. "Work on catching passes, too. Anything to make my team better and win some state championships."

Michel has been the talk of south Florida since he was an eighth grader and while his film certainly is what has everyone’s attention, he’s equally impressive in these settings. The 5-foot-11, 194-pounder ran a 4.46-second 40-yard dash and recorded a blistering 6.86 in the L-cone.

Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage freshman running back Sony Michel is well on his way to being one of the top recruits in the country in the class of 2014. He already has verbal offers from Miami and Florida State, with the rest of the nation’s top programs keeping an eye on the rising star.

Michel said he likes the programs that have offered along with Florida, Alabama and LSU.

“My options are open he said.”

Michel was promoted to the school’s varsity as an eighth grader and rushed for 1,825 yards and 18 touchdowns. He followed that up this past season with 1,730 yards and 21 scores.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- The high schools are both called American Heritage and while they might be 24 miles apart in South Florida, they both have talented young running backs.

Delray Beach (Fla.) American Heritage has Sony Michel, who rushed for over 1,700 yards as a freshman last year, and Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage features Class of 2013 RB Greg Bryant and both players put on a show at the Miami Nike Football Training Camp on Sunday at the University of Miami.

"I just come out here and tried to do my best," said Michel, who earned RB MVP honors. "I love to compete and I think I did very well today. It's always a lot of fun."

Michel was actually at this same event last season as an 8th grader and almost walked away with MVP honors a year ago. Yes, he's that good.

"I wanted to give him the MVP last year," said Jake Campbell, a running backs coach who has been with the Nike tour since 2007. "Even at this age, Sony really doesn't have a flaw to his game. He's just one of those can't miss kids and is really special. He's gotten so much bigger and better. He's scary."

But yet he's still very coachable.

"Look, Sony knows he's really good," Campbell said. "But he wants to get better and is always listening and is very coachable. He's 'Yes sir,' 'No sir' every time out."

And he doesn't just listen to coaches. He takes advice from other players as well.

"Hey, I coach him up when I can," said Miami Norland standout running back Duke Robinson. "I just try and tell him how to react to defenses because they are all trying to stop him. It takes a mindset and it's an adjustment. I just try and help him out, like a big brother."

While he has a different style than Michel, Bryant was almost as impressive on Sunday.

"Just look at that kid and you can tell," Campbell said. "He's younger and is on a different level than most backs. He's so powerful and strong."

Bryant, 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, was very happy he attended the NFTC.

"It was a great event because I think I learned a lot and there was so much competition," Bryant said. "I thought I played hard and competed."

While it's easy to think they're teammates because their schools have the same name, that probably wouldn't be real fair.

"People do get confused a lot," Bryant said. "But I like the idea. We would probably be unstoppable."

The running backs were led by a very talented and exciting prospect who still has some time until he needs to find a pen to sign a national letter of intent. Despite not having to worry about national signing day until 2014, Sony Michel (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) is already creating a buzz. The group MVP, Michel continues to impress every time we see him and Sunday was no different. He is quick and fluid with a compact and thick build. In pursuit drills, he displayed his speed by effortlessly gliding down the field. It looked like he wasn't even trying very hard, but he still remained tough to catch. Maybe the most impressive part though was his performance during a blocking drill. Watching Michel impress with the ball in his hands is not shocking, but the talented underclassman also displayed excellent ability as a blocker. He was tough and competitive when taking on linebackers. He got his hands on rushers quickly, kept a good low base and his quick feet which make him dangerous as a runner also served him well as a blocker as he was able to stay in front of and quickly cut-off and wash blockers when they tried to come inside on him. Standing there on the Hurricanes practice field and watching Michel block, I quickly thought of ex-Miami and former Denver Broncos and Washington Redskins back Clinton Portis. Michel flashed the ability to not only be a playmaker but also well-rounded which adds to his "Wow" factor.

Class of 2014 running back Sony Michel (Plantation, Fla./American Heritage) continues to shine. Physically, he is one of the most impressive prospects regardless of grade at any camp, combine or 7-on-7 that he shows up to. Michel is an excellent combination of speed, size and quickness and has impressive film to back up the athleticism he displays without pads.

Michel burst on the national scene in 2009 as an eighth grader, rushing for more than 1,800 against varsity competition. Michel has since developed into a South Florida legend and projects as one of 2014’s best despite a season ending injury as sophomore. Early recruiting buzz: Alabama, Miami (Fla.), Florida State, Notre Dame and Florida, among others, have offered verbally.

I have not seen a single, solitary link or reference anywhere in this player's thread where he has indicated ANY interest in South Carolina...beyond the OP comment about TBS saying he's "a guy to keep an eye on"...and that was back in 2010. At this late stage, I can't see us becoming a top player for his interests.....it's always possible, but I imagine we haven't offered him due to him not having any interest in us at all.....
