...by the way GH, THANK YOU for your service and for molding so many young men into the soldiers our country needs. They will contribute so much to our society in the coming years and you had a direct influence on that. Kudos for making a difference.

The little saver newsletter gets dropped on my lawn every week. I certainly appreciate that the distributers offered me a chance to get in on the weekly savings but I decline.
For me it is equal to a stranger dropping by my house once a week, putting garbage on my lawn and saying, "Hey, throw this away for me."

Thank you very much A. Now. One of the things I found through this experience is that these guys and girls come to us as kids straight out of high school and their parents house and they have strong drive to be responsible adults and citizens. I love that and I cannot talk bad about the youth of this nation. There are so many different backgrounds and experiences and social structures these people come from but they want to wear the uniform. For better and worse, I let them know what that entails physically and mentally right away.

The amount taken out for social security is 6.2%. For medicare is 1.45%. Total taken out for both amounts is 7.65%. Your employer pays another 7.65%

Every few years, go to the SSA website and request a copy of your earnings and benefits

True. However retirement is just one of your SS benefits. If you die early it provides for your spouse and children. If you become disabled it provides for you. Ideally in addition to SS you should have other short, mid, and long term investment vehicles. If young a whole life insurance policy. A Roth IRA. 401K and such if offered. A Holiday fund account. An emergency savings account to keep you afloat for 90 days in the case of disaster. Other savings and investments for specific needs such as car, home, vacation, etc. An independent financial planner who is certified in tax, insurance, and investments can be extremely helpful in putting you on the right track and maximizing your returns.
