You know what's funny? My German flatmates have no interest in the Olympics or that fact that their team just won the Gold in Beach Volleyball

Basically there is only one sport in Germany that people care about...Fußball

That's one of the things I like about the USA...people play a variety of sports and support (or at least acknowledge) their country even in the less popular sports.

Meh, he is impressive but I would hardly say he is the "greatest athlete to live.". The guy does one thing...Albeit, he does it better than any person in recorded history...it's still one thing. Running fast.

Maybe I'm alone here, but in my mind the word "athlete" means more than being the fastest runner. If he would have said, "I'm now a legend. I'm also the greatest sprinter to live.", I'd be 100% cool with it.

On a side note, the Olympics are an awesome event, an amazing time for people to get together and celebrate athletics and patriotism. This marks the sixth games of the Olympiad that I can recall (I don't count '88 since I was 4), and I hope I am able to watch 20 more.

But, is anyone else here repulsed by women's gymnastics? Don't get me wrong, I respect those girls' athletic abilities, but it grosses me out to watch them on t.v...I'm sure some people will say that's because my mind is in the gutter or whatever, but I just don't think that a 16-18 year old girl should look like those girls do. I'm 99% positive that there have been studies that show the negative effects their training and diets have on their health. I really don't understand what the big hooplah is over it. I just can't find myself watching women in their late teens who look like 13 year old boys.

Anyway, off my soap box...I'm sure I'll get flamed pretty hard, but oh well.

I agree about Bolt. To me the best "athlete" in the world is probably someone who wins the decathlon or something like that. (And USA went 1-2 in that, btw) I want to like Bolt, I really do. He's the absolute best and what he does. I appreciated him stopping his interview for the US National Anthem a few days ago. But when he says stuff like that I just roll my eyes. His twitter bio also proclaims he's "The most naturally gifted athlete the world has ever seen."

About women's gymnastics, I won't really get into it. I'm a big gymnastics fan (and also female) so their bodies don't really freak me out. I do agree that some other countries do seem to have "underdeveloped" girls. Partially from their training, partially from health and medical care not being at the same level as ours. I didn't look like those girls did at 16 but some people in the world do. And part of the reason I like the US girls so much is because they look like REAL girls with muscles and figures.
