Phelps is the most decorated Olympian and greatest swimmer.

I'll give greatest Ahtlete to someone like Jim Thorpe, Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders.

Untill he puts on pads and does something in the NFL, he's just a sprinter. Mad respect for his talent though.

Phelps is a boss...He's definitely my all-time favorite Olympian, and probably always will be, but I'm a little biased.

I remember back in 2003 I was working at watersports place back home in NMB and I picked up this chick from Baltimore. I took her home, and whatever...then she started asking me if I had heard of Phelps. This was pre-Athens, and like most Americans I didn't know dick about swimming...definitely not enough to know who Phelps was when he was 18. She was bragging about how awesome of a swimmer he was and that he was the best in the world, yada yada yada, then she said that she knew him and had his number in her phone. So like anyone would do, I challenged her to call him...and he picked up. I was proven wrong, they definitely knew each other, and I even got to tell him hello, and admit to him that I didn't think they knew each other.

Anyway, that's how I inadvertantly "met" Michael Phelps through a one-night stand I had when I was 18, and hence why he is and probably always will be my favorite Olympian.

I don't know enough about Thorpe to have an opinion (just what I've heard on t.v.), but Bo taught Deion how to lace up his cleats.

Yea I'm not old enough to see Bo and of course not Thorpe but just from reading those are my votes.

Thorpe won Olympic golds and played Pro football and Baseball

No one is going to win more than 8 golds in a single Olympics, 18 career golds, and 22 total medals. Phelps is a once in century type athlete. The only sports that someone could do this is speed skating, gymnastics, or swimming, track is iffy

During his senior year in high school, Bo rushed for ~1200 yards, hit 20 home runs in 25 games, and won the state championship in the 100m.

He then went to Auburn where he qualified for the 100m nationals his freshman and sophomore years, before he decided to quit running track. During his senior year in college, Bo rushed for ~1800 yards and won the Heisman, he also hit .401 with 17 bombs and 43 RBI.

He then ran a 4.12 40yd dash at the combine and was subsequintly picked #1 overall by the Buccaneers, but elected to play baseball instead. His rookie season he played just over 100 games and hit 22 homers. He averaged over 5 yards a carry in his short NFL career that was cut short by a crazy hip dislocation in 1990.

I watched a documentary on this dude on ESPN once, and some of the stories that came out of his childhood rivaled the ones you hear about Herschel Walker...just Bo was dominating 3 sports for most of his adult life and nearly every level of competition.

If he hadn't injured himself, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind he would be looked at by everyone on the planet as the greatest athlete to ever live.

Sorry, I was talking about Bolt. It would take a young dominant swimmer quite a while to touch Phelps record. It's doable if some young swimmer puts their mind to it, especially if Phelps is really done.
