Default Trailer/Towing Hitch Question

I should know this from all the towing I do, but have never tried it and feel like it should work in theory without a problem...everything I tow is either pintle or 2". But:

Should you be able to tow a trailer with tongue requiring 2-5/16" ball with a pintle combo hitch that has a 2" ball on it?

My thinking is that although the trailer tongue is setup for a 2-5/16...once that pintle ring is locked down on the ball, why should it matter the size of the ball it is sitting on? It should swivel around and stay in place just as a pintle ring would.

No?

I dont think so. Sure the 2" ball would pivot right but seems like you would be open to vertical slop that could lead to tongue hopping off ball due to road vibration and lack of shock absorbers
