Certainly...if someone can prove they invented the tag, they should be entitled to royalties.
And the person trying to profit off Johnny Football should have to pay royalties to all parties associated with the tag, which needs to be copywrited.

And if someone one day invents "Clowneying"....Jadeveon needs to be a beneficiary of any financial gains. Then again, if you own the copywrite, that probably makes you liable if someone wants to sue.

I don't feel bad for these athletes not getting paid. How many athletes get free educations that bring in no money to the school? It is a financial investment for both sides. The school invest in the athlete to make money on publicity and such, while the athlete invest in the ability to get a free education and exposure to get to the next level.

Why do we not complain about high school sports using their athletes? They do the same thing, just at a smaller level. These athletes aren't exploited and tired of this BS.

If they are so strapped for cash, may be they shouldn't be getting 1000's of dollars in tattoos. They don't want a couple more bucks, these guys just want to live as if they are rock stars. It is the same reason why they all go broke within 5 years of leaving the league. They don't manage their money or value it.

Not many.
The only sports that make money for schools are basketball and football, those are also the only men sports that get full ride scholarships (aka free education)
The rest of the men's sports only get partial scholarships and have to either pay the rest of their way or get Academic scholarships.

There are countless players who get free education who never contribute significantly to the team or help draw fans to games. So many of scholarships are financial losses for schools.

He was not a freshman. He will be in next years combine after having 3 full years of college completed.

Those 5 players can't play by themselves. They have to have the contributions of the other "less important" players, so everyone earns their scholarships - not just the "stars." Some players are important in practice, though they hardly ever see the field during a game. SOS gives the 85 scholarships to the ones who are contributing the most. Nobody gets one, or travels, if they aren't producing somewhere.

Also, I'm not wealthy, but I have wealthy friends who are Gamecock fans. One of them told me last week that by the time they donate a scholarship, pay fees, and buy their tickets, they spend $50,000 a year on Gamecock football. That indicates to me that the university is not taking a loss. Sponsors provide the scholarships, not the university. If some of the players have LIFE scholarships or PELL grants, the state of South Carolina and the federal government are funding those. That's US, not the university.

The copyright happened during the year, the new story is the NCAA's ruling this week that if he sues and wins, he can keep the money. Not that they really had a choice in the matter, if you ask me.

I discussed this in the Manziel thread, but I feel like this is a total d-bag move.

He is suing a dude making t shirts from a dummy corporation set up by his daddy for a couple of grand when he stands to make millions very soon just to prove a point.

If a major corporation (eg Nike) was doing this and the sum of money/exploitation was obvious then I would agree, but it sounds like this is a small time operation looking to make cool t shirts that students of AandM would dig and help push Manziel's heisman status.

So if we go with your logic of they can't do it alone on the field, well the same is said with their pursuit of the NFL would be impossible without the opportunity afforded them by the university. If these colleges never offered them a scholarship and spent the money on all the training tables, coaches, etc. the players would not have been able to reach his potential.


Also I never said that all these college are losing money on football as a whole, though some universities do. I said that it is an investment and some investments pay off more than others. Just as it the player has a choice to maximize the opportunity being given them by the university. These players are given a free education to schools that could cost as much as 200K for a four year education. If you stay 5 years, you can get a masters on top of that and it can be worth over 350K. The only kids being taken advantage of are those being manipulated into believing that the free education isn't something to be valued.

This dumbass notion that its "unfair" to athletes is 90% of what is wrong with our country. This is the same sentiment that is leading to stupid things like the occupy Wallstreet, because they aren't getting as much as other. If someone puts in more money and risks more, they are naturally going to get more. Yet, our current culture thinks its unfair when the owner makes more money than an employee.
