Just to be funny, I filled out an online app, to work part time. on my days off from this job. I'm wondering what it's like, how you're treated, are the managers cool, etc. Any insight would be appreciated. Thx.

its a store-by-store thing, just like Lowes. The store I was at in Seneca: employees, awesome. managers, absolute dickbags. However the one in Central and the original one in Anderson, nothing but awesome things about them. Just depends on who runs the store and what type of people work there.

I will say this...their hiring process must be really weird. Whenever I was unemployed quite a few years back, I was tired of raking in unemployment and sitting around doing nothing while looking for my "career" job. I applied at both Lowe's and Home Depot as they listed positions available...with experience in construction, retail, and my college degree AND I put availability at all times- I never received a phone call or e-mail. Then a couple weeks later, I came across an old high school classmate (a deadbeat kind of guy) and he was just hired on. Weird.
FYI, this was also in Aiken.

what WC said........plus, at both Lowes and HD, they require you take what is called the Reid Test (at least they used to)...it is basically a test on honesty. If you answer the questions honestly, you will never get hired. To pass this honesty test to get hired, you have to lie through your teeth!

No honesty tests or anything crazy. The application was sorta confusing but the best thing to do is apply to every department possible.

They take their time with applications. You'll get some weird automated call and then talk to someone from their retail staffing center. They usually have 2 people in the interview and they want to hear that you are willing to stay for the long term (they promote from within at the store level). If they ask you to come back to meet the manager, you are pretty much hired, just don't **** it all up.
They (we I should say) are great to work for. Don't expect to make bank on the way in the door. Cashiers make the least at $8, lot guys are slightly higher. If you have any experience in millwork, lumber, garden, hardware, or flooring, you can expect to start in the double digits per hour. They are being really stiff with hours lately because of our idiot president's retarded policies, so don't expect to be scheduled for more than 20-25 hours a week (You'll almost always get another hour or so on the clock a week if you do your job right and don't rush to clock out). There are plenty of other benefits to the job. You don't get an employee discount, but they do have profit sharing once you are there for more than 90 days. If you are going to get in, now is the time because March-April-May is the busiest/most profitable time of the year. They do profit sharing over a 6 month period. So like if your store makes its revenue nut for the February-July, you'll get a nice little paycheck come August. BTW, if you do apply and do get interviewed, you should know that customer service is by far the most important trait that Home Depot cares about. You can be the best millwork guy or best electrician in a 100 mile radius, but if you aren't friendly and can't smile and seek out customers, then HD doesn't want or need you. Hope this all helps. |

I was offered a job at a Lowe's once, interviewed with a assistant manager and some other person, then got called back to meet with the manager. They kept trying to get me to say that I planned to be there for a long time. I was like I'm in school to be a teacher, I am not staying at Lowe's a long time. Still offered me the job, but then they said they couldn't work with my school schedule so I went somewhere else.
