As the whistle blew on Sunday’s MVP Camp Atlanta, offensive linemen were tugging on end David Johnson (Lithonia, Ga.), trying to squeeze in a last one-on-one.

If Johnson continues to perform as he did in earning the most valuable defensive lineman honor, more colleges figure to try pulling him toward their campuses. And 247Sports figures to string him up its rankings.

Johnson perhaps raised his stock as much as anyone, as the 6-foot-1, 253-pounder utilized a size and quickness combo, impressive balance as well as a grab bag of moves to defeat his fare share of the event’s top offensive tackles.

Johnson carries an 89 rating from 247Sports as a three-star prospect and is ranked No. 34 in the state of Georgia.

He recently visited Auburn and has also been to South Carolina, Alabama and Vanderbilt this spring. Alabama is the only one of those which hasn’t offered, while Mississippi State and Southern Miss have tendered as well.

Johnson considers himself an outside linebacker but perhaps projects best as an undersized end/linebacker, a la former South Carolina standout Eric Norwood.

Without coincidence, the Gamecocks are in the strongest shape for Johnson, having added a pair of Lithonia products – offensive lineman Joe Harris and linebacker Cedric Cooper – in consecutive years.

“My top three are South Carolina, Auburn and Vanderbilt,” Johnson said. “But South Carolina is calling me real hard and is going to be tough to turn down.”

Eight players carried home large trophies for their performances. Simmons said he was "very impressed with" David Johnson, the Lithonia (Ga.) High School prospect that carried home a plaque for being the top defensive lineman.
"Johnson is a hybrid guy and he could play with his hand down at end or drop back to linebacker on the next level. He had a very good day today though. He was quick off the ball and he dominated the man in front of him during the one-on-ones."

Johnson first impressed by weighing in at 253-pounds on Sunday, and then put together a dominant performance in drills and the one-on-one setting earning 247Sports defensive MVP. He showed an excellent first step, showed a lightening quick spin move and displayed a powerful bull rush and competed against all comers. His leverage was outstanding throughout the day. South Carolina is the current leader for Johnson, who was a high school teammate of current Gamecocks linebacker Cedrick Cooper and 2012 recruit Joe Harris at Lithonia.

Quick note: The junior utilized his speed and technique to make quick work of several offensive linemen that were much larger in stature. Johnson lost his shirt, literally, in earning this honor and could make some noise on the next level as an outside linebacker in a 3-4. He already has SEC offers from Auburn, Mississippi State and South Carolina.

Johnson is full of energy and he played with a lot of it throughout this event. He and DeVine went at and both had their moments. Will he be a rush end or a linebacker on the next level? That is the question right now, but he will be a contributor no matter where he plays. He is versatile, he adapts well, and he plays hard.

In this setting, there are very few that impress at defensive end like Johnson. His motor and competitive fire is uber impressive. At 6-foot-1 and 253-pounds, his future position remains in question - but not his ability to play.
