Stupid Question: why does the insurance company(sometimes) mail you a check?

...then you have to take the check up to the provider. Why didn't they just pay the provider, like they pay everyone else? I don't get it?

Insurance companies are freaking stupid...I honestly don't think they know who or where they are sending their benefits

When I look on my insurance company's website, they say they paid this particular bill. But, then I get a check today(in my name), for the exact same amount. I am assuming that the check is for the provider(in this case an anesthesiologist), but we haven't yet received a bill from the latter.

I just don't get why they didn't send them the check. I don't want it!

It happens in my practice all the time. The rub is when the patient cashes the check and does not pay their bill...it is like they were paid to go to the doctor. If you pay the bill to anesthesiologist, be sure to get a receipt. In my practice if the patient cashes the check and does not pay bill, we notify insurance carrier bc in TN (at least) it is considered insurance fraud.

My auto insurance company mailed me an invoice for 17 cents once. The stamp alone costs more than that.

This is more than likely your situation. The DR. is not in your network, therefore they send YOU the check and you're responsible for paying it.

not sure, but if you dont sign paperwork at the dr office assigning benefits to the dr, the ins co sends the money to you, idk

Sometimes rates change even if it's a little bit and your insurance co. will adjust the premium. If you are on the positive side, you get the reimbursement. When you call in for changes to your policy, that's also when you may get a check, or a bill. Regardless either way, you should get an endorsement statement from them explaining the change.
